{"id":50921,"date":"2025-12-08T02:05:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-08T08:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=50921"},"modified":"2025-12-08T01:36:56","modified_gmt":"2025-12-08T07:36:56","slug":"top-armed-services-dem-says-sept-2-strike-video-would-show-republicans-description-completely-false","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=50921","title":{"rendered":"Top Armed Services Dem says Sept. 2 strike video would show Republicans\u2019 description \u2018completely false\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee said Sunday that surveillance video of U.S. military strikes targeting an alleged drug trafficking vessel in the Caribbean Sea on Sept. 2 would contradict how Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and other Republicans have described it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen they [the survivors] were finally taken out, they weren\u2019t trying to flip the boat over. The boat was clearly incapacitated. A tiny portion of it remained, capsized, the bow of the boat. They had no communications device. Certainly, they were unarmed,\u201d Rep. Adam Smith, one of the Democratic lawmakers who saw the video, said. \u201cAny claim that the drugs had somehow survived that attack is hard, hard to really square with what we saw.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Smith called the video \u201cdeeply disturbing\u201d and said \u201cit did not appear that these two survivors were in any position to continue the fight.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s counter to how Hegseth and Republican Sen. Tom Cotton, the chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee who also viewed the video, have described the circumstances preceding the second strike.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Cotton told reporters he had no doubt about the legality of the strike and said he \u201csaw two survivors trying to flip a boat loaded with drugs bound for the United States back over so they could stay in the fight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">On Saturday, Hegseth recounted what he had been told about the subsequent strike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was told, \u2018hey, there had to be a reattack, because there were a couple folks who could still be in the fight. Access to radios. There was a link up point of another potential boat, drugs were still there. They were actively interacting with them,\u2019\u201d the secretary said at the Reagan National Defense Forum.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/new-details-emerge-controversial-sept-2-strike-alleged\/story?id=128090044\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Asked by \u201cThis Week\u201d anchor George Stephanopoulos about Hegseth&#8217;s comments, Smith said, \u201cThat&#8217;s ridiculous. There are no radios.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey ought to release the video,\u201d Smith said. \u201cIf they release the video, then everything that the Republicans are saying will clearly be portrayed to be completely false. And people will get a look at it, and they will see. The boat was adrift. It was going where the current was going to take it, and these two were trying to figure out how to survive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">President Donald Trump has said the administration would have \u201cno problem\u201d releasing the video of the strike in question, but Hegseth was noncommittal when asked Saturday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhatever we were to decide to release, we&#8217;d have to be very responsible about it so we\u2019re reviewing that right now.,\u201d Hegseth said at the Reagan National Defense Forum. \u201cI&#8217;m way more interested in protecting that than anything else. So, we&#8217;re viewing the process, and we&#8217;ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Smith argued the strike video lawmakers were shown is \u201cno different\u201d than the strike videos the administration has already publicly released.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt seems pretty clear they don&#8217;t want to release this video because they don&#8217;t want people to see it, because it&#8217;s very, very difficult to justify,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Sen. Eric Schmitt, a Republican member of the Armed Services Committee who has not seen the video, defended the administration in a separate interview on \u201cThis Week.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe fact is, these cartels now, because the southern border is closed, they&#8217;ve gone to the high seas. So President Trump is acting with his core Article II powers. No serious legal expert would doubt that the president has authority to blow narco-terrorists out of the water,\u201d Schmitt said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The Missouri senator continued, \u201cPresident Trump has been delegated the authority by Congress to designate terrorist organizations. He&#8217;s done that. He sent a letter to Congress saying he was going to initiate these strikes. We&#8217;ve had regular briefings about it.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodmorningamerica.com\/news\/video\/hegseth-defends-2nd-boat-strike-supports-admiral-128183884\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Schmitt argued the criticism from Democrats amounts to \u201cpolitics and trying to take out Secretary Hegseth.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">On Saturday, Hegseth said designating cartels as terrorist organizations makes them a \u201ctarget\u201d just like al-Qaida. But the legality of the entire operation targeting these vessels has been a central debate, and legal experts have questioned the administration&#8217;s justification.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you say anyone who has drugs that they&#8217;re intending to illegally transit to the U.S. is a legitimate target for deadly force, the amount of power that gives the president and the U.S. military is unprecedented, and something that ought to be concerning to all of the American people,\u201d Smith, the top Armed Services Democrat, said on \u201cThis Week.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Schmitt, however, insisted the strikes are legal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey&#8217;re completely authorized. I reviewed the 40-plus page memo by the Office of Legal Counsel. There&#8217;s [Judge Advocates General] officers in these rooms, George, every time there&#8217;s a strike,\u201d Schmitt said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The opinion by the Justice Department\u2019s Office of Legal Counsel has not been made public. Democrats have called for it to be released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Schmitt&nbsp;was also asked about&nbsp;Trump\u2019s decision to pardon Juan Orlando Hernandez, the former president of Honduras, who was serving a 45-year sentence in the United States on multiple counts of drug and weapons trafficking in 2024.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo you support this pardon of the former Honduran president?\u201d Stephanopoulos asked Schmitt.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;m not familiar with the facts or circumstances, but I think what&#8217;s telling here is to try to imply that somehow President Trump is soft on, on drug smuggling is just ridiculous,\u201d Schmitt said. &#8220;It&#8217;s totally ridiculous.
