President Trump\u2002<\/u><\/a>on Sunday said he does not think Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky\u2002<\/u><\/a>is ready to sign off on a U.S.-proposed peace plan between Ukraine and Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president, in an exchange with reporters ahead of his hosting the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, D.C., expressed concern regarding Zelensky\u2019s thoughts on the peace plan. This follows controversy surrounding the initial 28-point plan<\/u><\/a> the U.S. proposed and subsequent talks among Russian, Ukrainian and U.S. representatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have to say that I\u2019m a little bit disappointed that President Zelensky hasn\u2019t yet read the proposal, that was as of a few hours ago,\u201d Trump said Sunday evening. \u201cHis people love it, but he hasn\u2019t. Russia\u2019s fine with it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is unclear whether Trump\u2019s comments Sunday are referring to the plan already on the table, or a new peace proposal in the works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Special envoy Steve Witkoff\u2002<\/u><\/a>and the president\u2019s son-in-law, Jared Kushner,<\/u><\/a> on Friday met with Rustem Umerov,<\/u><\/a> secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, and Ukrainian negotiator Andriy Hnatov in Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zelensky on Saturday praised those talks as \u201clong and substantive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am grateful for a very focused, constructive discussion,\u201d Zelensky wrote on the social media platform X<\/u><\/a>. \u201cWe covered many aspects and went through key points that could ensure an end to the bloodshed and eliminate the threat of a new Russian full scale invasion, as well as the risk of Russia failing to honor its promises, as has happened repeatedly in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zelensky said that his government will \u201ckeep working in good faith with the American side to genuinely achieve peace,\u201d and thanked Trump \u201cfor such an intensive approach to negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot everything can be discussed over the phone, so we need to work closely with our teams on ideas and proposals,\u201d Zelensky said. \u201cOur approach is that everything must be workable \u2013 every crucial measure for peace, security, and reconstruction. Thank you!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
