Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro\u2002<\/u><\/a>(D) accused former Vice President Kamala Harris\u2002<\/u><\/a>of telling \u201cblatant lies\u201d to write her postcampaign memoir<\/u><\/a> \u201c107 Days\u201d and \u201ccover her a\u2013,\u201d according to a profile about the governor published in The Atlantic<\/u><\/a> on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reporter Tim Alberta\u2002<\/u><\/a>described Shapiro as \u201cbetween outrage and exasperation as I relayed the excerpts\u201d about him from Harris\u2019s book<\/u><\/a>. She accused Shapiro of taking over the conversation when he was interviewed to be her running mate, allegedly insisting on being \u201cin the room for every decision,\u201d Alberta wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe wrote that in her book?\u201d Shapiro asked. \u201cThat\u2019s complete bulls\u2014. I can tell you that her accounts are just blatant lies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alberta also told Shapiro about some of the questions Harris recounted him asking her during the interview, including about the size of the vice president\u2019s Naval Observatory home and if the governor could loan Pennsylvania art for the residence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shapiro defended himself and said that anyone would ask questions \u201cif someone was talking to you about forming a partnership and working together.\u201d When asked if he felt betrayed by Harris, Shapiro \u201csnapped,\u201d Alberta wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI mean, she\u2019s trying to sell books and cover her a\u2013,\u201d Shapiro responded before he backtracked and told Alberta, \u201cI shouldn\u2019t say \u2018cover her a\u2013.\u2019 I think that\u2019s not appropriate. She\u2019s trying to sell books. Period.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harris passed on Shapiro, who was among the names floated to be her potential vice president, and instead chose Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz\u2002<\/u><\/a>(D).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shapiro also went after the Democratic Party, which lost the swing state he oversees to President Trump. The president won Pennsylvania with just more than 50 percent of the vote, while Harris received nearly 49 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDemocrats lost ground in some of these communities by failing to show up and failing to treat people with a level of respect that they deserve,\u201d Shapiro told Alberta. \u201cDonald Trump\u2002<\/u><\/a>has been a once-in-a-generation political figure who\u2019s managed to connect on a deeper cultural level.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In September, Shapiro jabbed Harris for not talking about former President Biden\u2019s\u2002<\/u><\/a>decision to drop out of the race. Shapiro was among the Democrats who questioned Biden\u2019s physical fitness in running for a second term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was direct with them,\u201d Shapiro said on sports commentator Stephen A. Smith\u2019s SiriusXM show<\/u><\/a>. \u201cI told them my concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the time, Shapiro said he had not read \u201c107 Days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The memoir was met with some criticism from other prominent Democrats, including former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. Harris wrote that he was her \u201cfirst choice\u201d<\/u><\/a> for a running mate, <\/strong>but that their ticket would have been \u201ctoo risky.\u201d Buttigieg said he was \u201csurprised\u201d<\/u><\/a> to read that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also called California Gov. Gavin Newsom\u2002<\/u><\/a>(D) to ask for an endorsement after Biden dropped out of the race, according to the book. She received the text reply, \u201cHiking. Will call back,\u201d and said Newsom did not call her back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newsom told NBC News\u2019s Kristen Welker\u2002<\/u><\/a>on \u201cMeet the Press<\/u><\/a>\u201d in October that he did not know why that \u201cwas even in the book.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd I sent out an endorsement a few minutes after [my text] as one of her first endorsements,\u201d Newsom said. \u201cI\u2019ve known Kamala all my life. The last person she needs an endorsement from is me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shapiro, Buttigieg, Newsom and Harris are all among the growing list of possible Democratic contenders in the 2028 presidential race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
