Vice President Vance\u2002<\/u><\/a>said Sunday that six Democratic lawmakers<\/u><\/a> violated the law by telling service members to disobey illegal orders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf the president hasn\u2019t issued illegal orders, then members of Congress telling the military to defy the president is by definition illegal,\u201d Vance said on the social platform X<\/u><\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this week, Democratic Sens. Elissa Slotkin\u2002<\/u><\/a>(Mich.) and Mark Kelly\u2002<\/u><\/a>(Ariz.) and Reps. Chris Deluzio\u2002<\/u><\/a>(D-Pa.), Maggie Goodlander (D-N.H.), Chrissy Houlahan\u2002<\/u><\/a>(D-Pa.) and Jason Crow\u2002<\/u><\/a>(Colo.) directly addressed<\/u><\/a> active-duty military and intelligence personnel in a video on X<\/u><\/a>, saying, \u201cOur laws are clear. You can refuse illegal orders.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All six lawmakers have backgrounds in military or intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Trump\u2002<\/u><\/a>responded by calling the group<\/u><\/a> \u201ctraitors\u201d on his Truth Social platform<\/u><\/a> and later said that they were guilty<\/u><\/a> of \u201cSEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Saturday evening, the president repeated his sedition assertions<\/u><\/a> and said the lawmakers<\/u><\/a> \u201cSHOULD BE IN JAIL RIGHT NOW.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vance was responding to Slotkin telling host Martha Raddatz\u2002<\/u><\/a>on ABC\u2019s \u201cThis Week\u201d that she is \u201cnot aware<\/u><\/a>\u201d of any illegal military actions authorized by Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since returning to office in January, the president has deployed or attempted to send the National Guard to Los Angeles; Washington, D.C.; Memphis; and other cities, citing concerns about crime or protests against immigration enforcement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Posse Comitatus Act<\/u><\/a>, however, generally bars the military from being used in civilian law enforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A federal judge ruled in September<\/u><\/a> that Trump\u2019s deployment of National Guard troops to Los Angeles violated the 1878 law. Another judge ruled earlier this week<\/u><\/a> that the president\u2019s deployment of troops to the nation\u2019s capitol exceeded his authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
