{"id":50108,"date":"2025-11-19T20:40:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-20T02:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=50108"},"modified":"2025-11-19T21:05:50","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T03:05:50","slug":"larry-summers-goes-on-leave-at-harvard-as-university-investigates-ties-to-epstein","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=50108","title":{"rendered":"Larry Summers goes on leave at Harvard as university investigates ties to Epstein"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Former Harvard University president&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/larry-summers\/\"><u>Larry Summers\u2002<\/u><\/a>will step back from teaching amid a university investigation into his ties with convicted sex offender&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/jeffrey-epstein\/\"><u>Jeffrey Epstein,<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;multiple news outlets reported Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cMr. Summers has decided it\u2019s in the best interest of the Center for him to go on leave from his role as Director as Harvard undertakes its review,\u201d a spokesperson for Summers told&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2025\/11\/19\/business\/larry-summers-harvard\/\"><u>The Boston Globe<\/u><\/a>. Summers will also step aside from serving as&nbsp;director of the Kennedy School\u2019s Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Hill has reached out to Summers and Harvard for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Summers had previously announced, through a spokesperson, that he would leave his teaching role and not finish working through the rest of the semester,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2025\/11\/20\/summers-leaves-teaching-at-harvard\/\"><u>The Harvard Crimson<\/u><\/a>, Harvard\u2019s campus newspaper, reported Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cHis co-teachers will complete the remaining three class sessions of the courses he has been teaching with them this semester, and he is not scheduled to teach next semester,\u201d a spokesperson told the Crimson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Summers is not resigning from his posts at Harvard and has told the university about his decision to step back from both roles, the Globe reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Summers, who served as former President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/clinton\/\"><u>Clinton\u2019s\u2002<\/u><\/a>treasury secretary and as an economic adviser to former President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/obama\/\"><u>Obama,<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;resigned from his role on the OpenAI board, the board&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/business\/5612432-larry-summers-steps-down-open-ai-epstein\/\"><u>previously told The Hill.<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe appreciate his many contributions and the perspective he brought to the Board,\u201d the board said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The resignation and stepping back at Harvard come after Summers\u2019s name appeared in several email exchanges with Epstein released by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee last week. The exchanges took place after Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008 to soliciting minors for prostitution and soliciting a prostitute. He served 13 months in prison.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">One of his messages to Epstein in March 2019 about his interaction with a girl reads, \u201cI said what are you up to. She said \u2018I\u2019m busy\u2019. I said awfully coy u are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">On Monday, Summers said he was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/education\/5610109-larry-summers-steps-down-public-commitments-epstein\/\"><u>\u201cstepping back from public commitments\u201d<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;after the emails were made public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI am deeply ashamed of my actions and recognize the pain they have caused.
