The girl\u2019s father, 39-year-old Yuji Hu, of Calgary, Alberta, was killed while trying to save his daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In northern&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/california\">California<\/a>, in Sutter county, north of Sacramento, a 71-year-old man died after his vehicle was swept off a flooded bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Much further south, a wooden boat believed to have been ferrying migrants toward the US from Mexico capsized in stormy seas off the coast of San Diego, leaving at least four people dead and four hospitalized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The long plume of tropical moisture that formed over the Pacific Ocean began drenching the San Francisco Bay Area last Wednesday night and then unleashed widespread rain over southern California on Friday and Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Downtown LA saw more rain than any previous November, breaking a record previously set in 1985, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2025-11-17\/wettest-november-on-record-for-downtown-la-as-more-rain-moves-in\">Los Angeles Times<\/a>&nbsp;reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">On Monday, lingering thunderstorms continued to pose the risk of mudslides in areas of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/los-angeles\">Los Angeles<\/a>&nbsp;county that were recently ravaged by wildfire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cDue to the abundant rainfall the past couple of days, it will not take as much rainfall to cause additional flooding\/rockslide conditions,\u201d the National Weather Service said in a Sunday update. The agency advised the region on Monday to \u201cbe prepared for a soggy day\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Rain was expected to continue through Tuesday, the weather service said, while another storm was forecast to arrive on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">South-east of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/los-angeles\">Los Angeles<\/a>&nbsp;there was flooding in the Palm Springs area and road closures throughout the desert area of the Coachella valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">More than 4in of rain fell over coastal Santa Barbara county as the storm approached Los Angeles. Parts of the Sierra Nevada received more than a foot of snow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Amid the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/live\/2025\/nov\/17\/cop30-belem-brazil-global-warming-latest-news-updates\">climate crisis<\/a>, warming oceans are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2024\/feb\/11\/atmospheric-river-pacific-storms-climate-crisis\">supercharging<\/a>&nbsp;such atmospheric river storms,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/feb\/05\/california-flooding-atmospheric-rivers-bomb-cyclone\">making them deadlier and costlier<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Atmospheric rivers have long been important features of weather systems across the US west and are vital to replenishing the state\u2019s reservoirs and snowpack.
