New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani\u2002<\/u><\/a>(D) said that voting for Andrew Cuomo\u2002<\/u><\/a>is akin to voting for President Trump. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDonald Trump\u2002<\/u><\/a>has hand-picked his candidate. That candidate\u2019s name is Andrew Cuomo,\u201d Mamdani told MSNBC\u2019s Ari Melber<\/u><\/a> in an interview that aired Monday. \u201cAnd New Yorkers have the chance to hand pick their fighter. And I believe that candidate should be me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heading into Tuesday\u2019s general election, Mamdani is the frontrunner against Cuomo, running an independent campaign, and Republican Curtis Sliwa. An Emerson College Polling\/PIX11\/The Hill survey of New York City residents released<\/u><\/a> last week found that 50 percent of respondents backed Mamdani, while 25 percent backed Cuomo, 21 percent backed Sliwa and 4 percent said they were undecided. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an Emerson College Polling\/PIX11\/The Hill poll released<\/u><\/a> in September, Mamdani held a 15-point lead over Cuomo, who he defeated in the Democratic primary over the summer, and a 33-point lead over Sliwa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump, in the past few days, has backed Cuomo, despite Sliwa being the GOP nominee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On his Truth Social platform Monday evening, Trump called<\/u><\/a> Mamdani a \u201ccommunist\u201d and said he would withhold federal funding \u201cother than the very minimum as required\u201d to the country\u2019s largest city. The president added that a vote for Sliwa \u201cis a vote for Mamdani\u201d and that New York City residents should vote for Cuomo \u201cwhether you personally like [him] or not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump also indicated<\/u><\/a> to CBS News\u2019 Norah O\u2019Donnell on Friday that he would vote for Cuomo over Mamdani. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m not a fan of Cuomo one way or the other, but if it\u2019s going to be between a bad Democrat and a communist, I\u2019m gonna pick the bad Democrat all the time, to be honest with you,\u201d Trump said<\/u><\/a>, in an interview that aired Sunday on \u201c60 Minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mamdani sarcastically congratulated Cuomo on the social platform X<\/u><\/a> after the interview aired, saying, \u201cI know how hard you worked for\u201d the president\u2019s endorsement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
