{"id":48785,"date":"2025-10-20T07:19:32","date_gmt":"2025-10-20T12:19:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=48785"},"modified":"2025-10-20T07:19:37","modified_gmt":"2025-10-20T12:19:37","slug":"the-right-wants-charlie-kirk-memorials-across-the-us-but-is-it-just-an-attempt-to-capitalize-on-his-killing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=48785","title":{"rendered":"The right wants Charlie Kirk memorials across the US \u2013 but is it just an attempt to capitalize on his killing?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Critics say mandatory statues on college campuses and street renamings are a way to keep US culture wars going<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/republicans\">Republicans<\/a>&nbsp;and conservatives are campaigning to quickly build statues and other memorials across the United States for the slain rightwing activist Charlie Kirk in the wake of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/charlie-kirk-shooting\">his assassination<\/a>&nbsp;at a college event in Utah last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Political leaders in states such as Florida,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/michigan\">Michigan<\/a>&nbsp;and Oklahoma have not only called for construction of memorials but in some cases also threatened to penalize colleges that refuse to publicly honor Kirk, who was killed on 10 September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The heavy-handed push to honor Kirk, who held views that many see as racist and sexist, follows&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s moves to restore monuments of Confederate leaders that were removed in recent years, which appear to be part of a broad effort to impose rightwing views on the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe way in which you keep the culture war going \u2013 or the way that you win it \u2013 is to have religious icons like Charlie and use their face and their name and their likeness to further your cause,\u201d said Matthew Boedy, an English professor at the University of North Georgia who has studied Christian nationalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Kirk, who co-founded the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, was killed at Utah State University during one of his signature events in which he debated students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Since then, Trump and others in his administration, such as Stephen Miller, have blamed the shooting \u2013 without producing any evidence \u2013 on a coordinated violent effort by the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/sep\/20\/charlie-kirk-funeral-trump-republicans\">radical left<\/a>\u201d and threatened to \u201cidentify, disrupt,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/sep\/16\/trump-administration-news-updates-latest-today\">dismantle and destroy<\/a>\u201d the left\u2019s \u201cterrorism and terror networks\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Kirk often criticized gay and transgender rights and made Islamaphobic statements and once suggested that the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was a \u201cmistake\u201d. However, at the state and local level, Republican lawmakers have described Kirk as a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/OK\/text\/SB1187\/id\/3269906\/Oklahoma-2026-SB1187-Introduced.pdf\">modern civil rights leader<\/a>\u201d who stood for \u201callowing everybody to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/news\/2025\/10\/10\/florida-university-college-charlie-kirk-kevin-steele-roads-campus\/86612269007\/\">voice their opinion respectfully<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Just a week after Kirk\u2019s murder,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/ohio\">Ohio<\/a>&nbsp;Republican state senators Shane Jett and Dana Prieto introduced legislation that would require all of the state\u2019s public universities to build a \u201cCharlie Kirk memorial plaza\u201d with a statue \u201cthat features the conservative leader sitting at a table with an empty seat across from him\u201d or one of Kirk \u201cand his wife standing and holding their children in their arms\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A few weeks later, in Florida, state house representative Kevin Steele, a Republican, also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2026\/113\/?Tab=BillText\">proposed legislation<\/a>&nbsp;that would require all of the state\u2019s public universities to rename roads for Kirk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/florida\">Florida<\/a>&nbsp;State University shall redesignate Chieftain Way as Charlie James Kirk Road,\u201d the bill states. \u201cPasco-Hernando State College shall redesignate Mrs Prameela Musunuru Health and Wellness Trail as Charlie James Kirk Trail.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In Florida, if the schools do not establish the memorials by stated deadline, the state would withhold funding from the institutions, and in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/oklahoma\">Oklahoma<\/a>, the state would fine the schools, according to the legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Boedy, the University of North Georgia professor, likened the lawmakers\u2019 threats to withhold state money to Trump\u2019s moves to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/oct\/02\/trump-university-funding-compact\">cut off federal funding<\/a>&nbsp;to universities unless they met his list of demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cState funding for education should be based upon students\u2019 interest in majors, in enrollment and in science, in objective criteria, and honoring a single person is not part of that,\u201d said Boedy, who has been on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.professorwatchlist.org\/aboutus\">Turning Point\u2019s watchlist<\/a>&nbsp;of \u201cprofessors who discriminate against conservative students and advance leftist propaganda in the classroom\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Jett, Prieto and Steele did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Kirk was critical of higher education and wrote a book titled The College Scam: How America\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/universities\">Universities<\/a>&nbsp;Are Bankrupting and Brainwashing Away the Future of America\u2019s Youth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI find it really ironic that the state of Oklahoma is demanding that every public university have a Charlie Kirk memorial plaza,\u201d said Erika Doss, an art historian at the University of Texas at Dallas and the author of Memorial Mania: Public Feeling in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">While the states have not approved the legislation requiring the memorials, at least one Florida county has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/p\/1GkcJ72iAD\/\">installed a sign<\/a>&nbsp;for a Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway, despite&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lakecountyfl.portal.civicclerk.com\/event\/2454\/media\">some public opposition<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">And less than a week after the murder, New College of Florida, a liberal arts university that has been the subject of a conservative takeover, also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NewCollegeofFL\/status\/1967995112467665074\">posted on X<\/a>&nbsp;an AI-generated image of a bronze sculpture of Kirk at a table and stated that it would build the statue on campus \u201cto defend and fight for free speech and civil discourse in American life\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">That may not be easy. After events&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2011\/aug\/15\/ground-zero-memorial-september-9-11\">like 9\/11<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.war.gov\/Multimedia\/Experience\/Vietnam-Veterans-Memorial\/\">Vietnam war<\/a>, and the assassinations of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jfk.org\/john-f-kennedy-memorial-plaza\/\">John F Kennedy<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2011\/oct\/16\/martin-luther-king-honoured-washington\">Martin Luther King Jr,<\/a>&nbsp;public monuments were often not built for years, sometimes decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Quickly sharing a fake image of a Kirk memorial \u201cis a lie\u201d, Doss said. \u201cIt matters because it doesn\u2019t tell the truth about how complicated and necessarily complicated making public art should be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">By waiting years to build a memorial, you can see how time really changes the \u201cemotional tenor and the perspective on the event\u201d, said Gabriel Reich, a professor of history and social studies at Virginia Commonwealth University who has studied collective memories of the US civil war and emancipation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cHow people feel about [Kirk\u2019s killing] five years from now may be different, and it may depend on what happens between now and then,\u201d said Reich. \u201cDoes the political violence escalate and continue? Does it get tamped down?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">It\u2019s not a foregone conclusion that the schools will build the monuments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In Michigan, the Mecosta county board of commissioners wanted Ferris State University to build a statue for Kirk and offered to split the funding, but the school president declined, citing a \u201ca longstanding practice that limits statues on campus to individuals who have made significant, direct contributions to Ferris State University itself\u201d, according to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/2025\/10\/07\/charlie-kirk-statue-ferris-state-university-mecosta-county\/86563382007\/\">Detroit Free-Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">At New College, alum William Rosenberg sees the proposed statue as an attempt by the administration to distract from problems at the school, which was once a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/education\/2025\/09\/23\/uf-drops-fsu-rises-new-us-news-world-report-rankings\/\">highly ranked institution<\/a>&nbsp;considered among the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/pictures\/americas-most-liberal-colleges-ranked\/37\/\">most liberal<\/a>&nbsp;in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cNew College was a welcoming environment for people who were motivated and wanted to learn and wanted to do it on their own terms,\u201d said Rosenberg, who graduated in 1980 with a degree in medieval studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Florida\u2019s governor, Ron DeSantis, a Republican, has tried in recent years to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/jan\/29\/ron-desantis-florida-university-new-college-woke-war\">transform the school<\/a>&nbsp;by appointing political allies such as conservative activist Christopher Rufo to its board of trustees,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/nov\/11\/new-college-of-florida-rightwing-takeover\">firing its president<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/nov\/14\/new-college-of-florida-wokeness-course\">revamping<\/a>&nbsp;its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/article\/2024\/aug\/25\/ron-desantis-woke-university-policy-florida-sarasota-new-college\">curriculum<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Since then, the school has seen its national ranking and graduation and retention rates plummet, while the state now spends significantly more on each student than those at its other public universities, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/governance\/state-oversight\/2025\/10\/01\/spending-soars-rankings-fall-new-college-florida\">Inside Higher Ed<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">After posting the AI image of the statue, New College\u2019s president, Richard Corcoran, touted the public response in a weekly email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIn the first 72 hours of the announcement, New College of Florida was mentioned nearly 3 billion times (including traditional media in the graph below, and reposts on social media),\u201d the email stated. \u201cNormally, New College receives about 100 million impressions a month. In 72 hours, New College received about 2 1\/2 years of media coverage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A New College spokesperson, James Miller, declined an interview request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Rosenberg, a semi-retired computer engineer, doubts the school will actually build the statue because of Corcoran\u2019s \u201chistory of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/inthesetimes.com\/article\/new-college-florida-republicans-higher-ed\">promising the world<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wusf.org\/education\/2025-08-21\/new-college-baseball-field-of-dreams-hung-up-lack-faa-approvals\">delivering nothing<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cA lot of alumni feel it was a gross PR move to capitalize on Charlie Kirk\u2019s murder,\u201d Rosenberg said. \u201cNew College of Florida has now become a political pawn whose real mission is about making political headlines while the on-the-ground education has nosedived.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/oct\/20\/charlie-kirk-memorials-republicans\">theguardian<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Critics say mandatory statues on college campuses and street renamings are a way to keep US culture wars going Republicans&nbsp;and conservatives are campaigning to quickly build statues and other memorials across the United States for the slain rightwing activist Charlie Kirk in the wake of&nbsp;his assassination&nbsp;at a college event in Utah last month.
