Former Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Austin Beutner\u2002<\/u><\/a>has launched a challenge against the city\u2019s current mayor, Karen Bass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m running for LA Mayor. After 17 years in public life, I\u2019ve learned how to get things done and how special LA is. But our city is adrift, and it\u2019s time for us to work together to get LA back on track,\u201d Beutner, running as a Democrat, said in a post on the social platform X Monday morning.<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beutner\u2019s campaign follows recent turmoil in Los Angeles over President Trump\u2002<\/u><\/a>deploying the National Guard to the city, immigration policy and deadly wildfires earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bass faced backlash over her wildfire response<\/u><\/a>, including a trip abroad that was poorly timed as the crisis unfolded, with her favorability ratings suffering. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI voted for Karen Bass\u2002<\/u><\/a>last time. We had hopes, but now even she admits we need a citywide turnaround. I agree, Los Angeles needs change. This isn\u2019t an ordinary time, and I\u2019m not an ordinary candidate,\u201d Beutner said in a video posted to YouTube Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this month, Bass hit back at Trump\u2019s suggestion<\/u><\/a> of military use in American cities as \u201ctraining grounds,\u201d saying the president was \u201ccreating warfare within\u201d these cities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During an interview with CNN\u2019s Erin Burnett,<\/u><\/a> Bass discussed the president\u2019s comments at a large gathering of the nation\u2019s top generals and admirals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe statements that were made to the military yesterday, acknowledging that we are going to experiment with our cities and use our cities as training grounds for warfare, what that is saying is that the president of the United States wants to turn the U.S. military against the American people,\u201d Bass said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
