California Gov. Gavin Newsom\u2002<\/u><\/a>(D) mocked President Trump\u2019s recent comments about walking up the stairs<\/u><\/a> at the United Nations, calling him a \u201cvery weak man\u201d as government funding lapsed<\/u><\/a> overnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BUT DON\u2019T WORRY, DEMOCRATS ARE STRONG AND TRUMP ALWAYS CHICKENS OUT (T.A.C.O.),\u201d Newsom\u2019s press office said in a post<\/u><\/a> on social platform X early Wednesday, just past the midnight funding deadline<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNO SOMBRERO NEEDED!\u201d they added, referring to a controversial video shared by Trump that used artificial intelligence<\/u><\/a> to impose a sombrero and mustache on House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries\u2002<\/u><\/a>(D-N.Y.) in an effort to mock Democrats<\/u><\/a> amid the spending fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The post from Newsom\u2019s office was highlighting an incident during the U.N. General Assembly earlier this month, when an escalator with Trump and first lady Melania Trump\u2002<\/u><\/a>on it abruptly stopped<\/u><\/a>, forcing the two to walk the rest of the way up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s amazing that Melania and I didn\u2019t fall forward onto the sharp edges of these steel steps, face first,\u201d Trump said last week on Truth Social. \u201cIt was only that we were each holding the handrail tightly or, it would have been a disaster.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president called for an investigation<\/u><\/a> into the incident, along with a probe into a teleprompter glitch and audio issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.N. blamed Trump\u2019s team<\/u><\/a> for the stalled escalator and the teleprompter malfunction, saying a videographer stepped on the escalator before Trump and the first lady were on it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs the videographer, who was traveling backwards up the escalator reached the top, the First Lady, followed by President Trump,<\/u><\/a> each mounted the steps at the bottom. At that moment (9:50am), the escalator came to a stop,\u201d a U.N. spokesperson said last week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, with the government shut down<\/u><\/a>, federal employees deemed nonessential will be furloughed, the collection of some economic statistics will be paused, and many services will be delayed or suspended. This is the first federal government shutdown in more than six years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

GOP lawmakers have argued that they sought to keep government funding<\/u><\/a> at its current level with legislation<\/u><\/a> that would extend the deadline to Nov. 21. Democrats have stood firm<\/u><\/a> on demands for an extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies and for Republicans to walk back some Medicaid cuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newsom has gone after Trump in recent weeks on a host of topics, including the president\u2019s weight<\/u><\/a> and climate change remarks<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump slammed the Golden State governor<\/u><\/a> when he announced he would institute a 100 percent tariff on movies made outside the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur movie making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing \u2018candy from a baby,’\u201d the president wrote on Monday. \u201cCalifornia, with its weak and incompetent Governor, has been particularly hard hit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTherefore, in order to solve this long time, never ending problem, I will be imposing a 100 percent Tariff on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
