American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists hits back at linking of key painkiller, known widely as Tylenol or paracetamol, to autism \u2013 key US politics stories from 22 September 2025<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Donald Trump announced on Monday that pregnant women should limit their use of acetaminophen, usually branded as Tylenol in the US or paracetamol elsewhere, which he claimed heightens the risk of autism when it used by pregnant women, an assertion hotly contested by scientists internationally and contradicted by studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The president said he had \u201cwaited for 20 years for this meeting\u201d and added: \u201cIt\u2019s not that everything\u2019s 100% understood or known, but I think we\u2019ve made a lot of strides.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Experts immediately criticized the announcement. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the leading US organization for obstetricians and gynecologists, said Trump\u2019s announcement was \u201cirresponsible when considering the harmful and confusing message they send to pregnant patients\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cToday\u2019s announcement \u2026 is not backed by the full body of scientific evidence and dangerously simplifies the many and complex causes of neurologic challenges in children,\u201d the organization\u2019s president, Dr Steven Fleischman, said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
