A hiker was attacked by a bear in Yellowstone National Park after a surprise encounter on a trail Tuesday, park officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The hiker’s injuries are not life-threatening, but the 29-year-old sustained injuries to his chest and arm, the park said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The hiker was alone on the Turbid Lake Trail when he encountered the bear and tried to use spray, the park said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Based on the nature of the attack, the bear was likely a grizzly, the park said, although the hiker reported that it may have been a black bear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Turbid Lake Trail was closed until further notice following the attack. The trail is northeast of Mary Bay on Yellowstone Lake, the park said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBecause this incident was a defensive reaction by the bear during a surprise encounter, the park will not be taking any management action against the bear,\u201d Yellowstone National Park said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tuesday\u2019s incident was the first bear attack against a person in Yellowstone since May 2021. That also involved a solo hiker, the park said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Park officials recommend hiking in groups of three or more to help prevent bear attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
