{"id":47200,"date":"2025-09-09T13:12:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-09T18:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=47200"},"modified":"2025-09-10T04:18:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T09:18:13","slug":"barrett-weighs-in-on-trump-third-term-talk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=47200","title":{"rendered":"Barrett weighs in on Trump third-term talk"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Supreme Court Justice&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/amy-coney-barrett\/\"><u>Amy Coney Barrett\u2002<\/u><\/a>weighed in on President Trump floating the idea of a third term, acknowledging the 22nd Amendment prevents more than two terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Fox News \u201cSpecial Report\u201d host&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/bret-baier\/\"><u>Bret Baier\u2002<\/u><\/a>said in an interview with Barrett that aired Monday, \u201cThe 22nd Amendment says you can only run for office for two terms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cTrue,\u201d replied Barrett, who was nominated by Trump in his first term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">When Baier asked if she thought \u201cthat\u2019s cut-and-dried,\u201d Barrett said, \u201cWell, that\u2019s, you know, that\u2019s what the amendment says, right? You know, after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/fdr\/\"><u>FDR\u2002<\/u><\/a>had four terms, that\u2019s what that amendment says.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Former President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/franklin-delano-roosevelt\/\"><u>Franklin Delano Roosevelt\u2002<\/u><\/a>was elected for a third term in 1940 and later died in office during his fourth term, in 1945. In 1951, Congress passed the 22nd Amendment, which put the two-term tradition that dated back to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/george-washington\/\"><u>George Washington\u2002<\/u><\/a>into the Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In an appearance on ABC\u2019s \u201cThe View,\u201d Barrett\u2019s liberal colleague, Justice&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/sonia-sotomayor\/\"><u>Sonia Sotomayor,<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;was asked if she&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5493893-sotomayor-donald-trump-third-term-talk\/\"><u>believes the 22nd Amendment is settled law<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Sotomayor agreed that while the Constitution was settled law, no one had ever challenged the 22nd Amendment regarding running for a third term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cNo one has tried to challenge that. Until somebody tries, you don\u2019t know. So, it\u2019s not settled because we don\u2019t have a court case about that issue, but it is in the Constitution,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cAnd one should understand that there\u2019s nothing that\u2019s the greater law in the United States than the Constitution of the United States,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Trump and some of his allies have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5224002-trump-third-term-debate\/\"><u>repeatedly floated<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;the idea of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5222422-trump-third-term-not-joking\/\"><u>a third term<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;for him. At times, those comments have been dismissed as a joke, though Trump has at other points appeared more serious about the idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The president&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5437166-trump-2028-presidential-race\/\"><u>last month said<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;he would \u201cprobably not\u201d seek a third term, but added he would \u201clike to run.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Earlier this year, the president said, \u201cPeople are asking me to run. I don\u2019t know, I never looked into it. And they do say there\u2019s a way you can do it, but I don\u2019t know about that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">He also has said it\u2019s too soon to&nbsp;settle on a successor&nbsp;to serve as the Republican nominee in 2028, but has&nbsp;acknowledged Vice President Vance&nbsp;is the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/5437504-trump-vance-2028-gop-nominee\/\"><u>\u201cmost likely\u201d heir apparent<\/u><\/a>.
