District Court Judge Dianna Gibson ruled that the GOP-controlled state Legislature went around safeguards<\/u><\/a> against partisan gerrymandering with the latest lines and must redraw ahead of next year\u2019s midterms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Under the current map, Utah\u2019s four congressional districts are all held by Republicans. A redrawing could, depending on how lines are drawn around blue Salt Lake City<\/u><\/a>, mean an opportunity for Democrats to snag a House seat in the state. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIn throwing out the current, gerrymandered congressional map, voters in Utah will now have an opportunity to elect leaders that best represent their values, and not have their representation dictated by politicians,\u201d said Rep. Suzan DelBene\u2002<\/u><\/a>(Wash.), chair of the Democrats\u2019 House campaign arm, in a statement<\/u><\/a> on the ruling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Utah Democrats called the district court ruling a \u201cmandate for change<\/u><\/a>\u201d in the state and said they\u2019re \u201cready to hit the ground running next year.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n Sen. Mike Lee\u2002<\/u><\/a>(R-Utah), however, knocked the ruling, claiming Utah\u2019s electoral system is \u201cunder attack by Democrats and their leftist allies in the Utah courts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMake no mistake, this decision will make the process of drawing legislative districts in Utah *less* accountable to voters, not more[.] It\u2019ll also result in maps that are far more generous to Democrats, and that\u2019s the whole point,\u201d Lee wrote on the social platform X<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Voters in Utah approved<\/u><\/a> an independent redistricting commission via ballot initiative back in 2018, but that setup was rendered advisory<\/u><\/a> by a state law passed in 2020. Legislators drew the latest maps in 2021, disregarding a proposal from the commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the new ruling, the judge suggested that the current maps are unlawful because lawmakers had effectively ignored the voter-passed proposition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe nature of the violation lies in the Legislature\u2019s refusal to respect the people\u2019s exercise of their constitutional lawmaking power and to honor the people\u2019s right to reform their government,\u201d Gibson said in the ruling, which gives lawmakers a Sept. 24 deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The ruling comes against the backdrop of a broader redistricting fight brewing across the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n A Republican plan to redistrict in Texas prompted Democratic legislators in California to greenlight a plan that, if approved by voters, would effectively nullify potential GOP gains in the Lone Star State.
