{"id":46652,"date":"2025-08-27T04:39:39","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T09:39:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=46652"},"modified":"2025-08-27T04:43:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T09:43:10","slug":"democrats-break-gop-supermajority-in-iowa-senate-by-flipping-republican-seat-in-special-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=46652","title":{"rendered":"Democrats break GOP supermajority in Iowa Senate by flipping Republican seat in special election"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Iowa Democrats scored a significant victory Tuesday by flipping a Republican seat in a special election and breaking the GOP supermajority in the state Senate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Catelin Drey won the Sioux City-area district with 55% of the vote to Republican opponent Christopher Prosch&#8217;s 44%, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wcmelepub.wcicc.com\/\">unofficial results<\/a>&nbsp;with all precincts reporting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Democrats will now hold 17 seats in the Senate, compared with 33 for Republicans, breaking the GOP&#8217;s two-thirds supermajority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin celebrated Drey&#8217;s victory in a district Donald Trump won last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIowans are seeing Republicans for who they are: self-serving liars who will throw their constituents under the bus to rubber stamp Donald Trump\u2019s disastrous agenda \u2014 and they\u2019re ready for change,&#8221; Martin said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;Make no mistake: when Democrats organize everywhere, we win everywhere, and today is no exception,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Gov. Kim Reynolds, a Republican, had called the special election after Sen. Rocky De Witt, a Republican, died of cancer in June. He was first elected in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Republicans also hold the majority in the state House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Democrats have consistently performed well in special elections this year after Vice President Kamala Harris lost to Trump last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Democrat Mike Zimmer&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/elections\/democratic-performance-improving-slew-special-elections-weary-party-lo-rcna198984\">flipped a state Senate<\/a>&nbsp;seat in January when he bested his Republican opponent by 4 percentage points.
