{"id":46580,"date":"2025-08-25T13:47:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T18:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=46580"},"modified":"2025-08-25T05:48:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T10:48:08","slug":"trump-escalates-push-to-deploy-troops-to-cities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=46580","title":{"rendered":"Trump escalates push to deploy troops to cities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>President Trump&nbsp;<\/strong>has escalated his threat to deploy National Guard troops to major cities to address crime as the federal crackdown in Washington, D.C., enters its third week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Trump expanded his federal policing push over the weekend by suggesting he would turn next to Baltimore and Chicago, cities like D.C. that are overwhelmingly blue and represented by Democratic mayors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But unlike D.C., where the federal government has some authority to exert over policing, other cities retain more local control. Trump issued an emergency order Aug. 11 to federalize crime fighting in Washington for 30 days under a law unique to D.C. Trump also controls the D.C. National Guard, while governors typically command other states\u2019 Guards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Maryland Gov.&nbsp;<strong>Wes Moore<\/strong>&nbsp;(D) and Illinois Gov.&nbsp;<strong>JB Pritzker<\/strong>&nbsp;(D), both touted by Democrats as potential 2028 presidential contenders, have rebuffed Trump\u2019s threat to send troops and pull federal funding for their state\u2019s largest cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Trump&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5468291-trump-threatens-national-guard\/\"><u>threatened to send the National Guard to Baltimore<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;to \u201cquickly clean up the crime,\u201d squaring off with Moore, who invited Trump&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/governor.maryland.gov\/Documents\/Letter to President on Public Safety.pdf\"><u>by letter last week<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;to join him for a public safety walk through Charm City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cAs President, I would much prefer that he clean up this crime disaster before I go there for a walk,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5467900-trump-criticizes-maryland-governor\/\"><u>Trump wrote<\/u><\/a>. He&nbsp;suggested he could&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/foxbaltimore.com\/news\/local\/president-trump-says-send-the-troops-to-baltimore-attacks-maryland-governor-wes-moore\"><u>rescind federal funding<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;for the Francis Scott Key Bridge\u2019s nearly $2 billion reconstruction in Baltimore while separately swiping at Moore\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/maryland-governor-bronze-star-awarded-5c72bd12ff8e6b93aa830316cd884d6e\"><u>Bronze Star<\/u><\/a>, received last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cAfter only one week, there is NO CRIME AND NO MURDER IN DC!\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/2025\/08\/24\/trump-says-he-will-send-in-the-troops-to-baltimore-attacks-maryland-gov-wes-moore\/\"><u>the president wrote<\/u><\/a>, labeling Moore a \u201cfailing, because of Crime, Governor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The comments spurred Moore to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5468291-trump-threatens-national-guard\/\"><u>hit back in his own social media posts<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;Sunday, writing at one point,&nbsp;\u201cDonald Trump&nbsp;can stay obsessed with me \u2013 that\u2019s fine \u2013 but I\u2019ll stay obsessed with working in partnership to continue our historic success of driving down crime in Baltimore.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Chicago, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2025\/08\/23\/trump-chicago-military-national-guard\"><u>The Washington Post<\/u><\/a>, is part of Pentagon plans for deployment of several thousand National Guard troops. Trump&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/chicago\/news\/mayor-brandon-johnson-president-trump-chicago-federal-law-enforcement-crime-national-guard\/\"><u>bashed the Windy City<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;on Friday, while Mayor&nbsp;<strong>Brandon Johnson<\/strong>&nbsp;(D) warned the president\u2019s deployment of troops would be an illegal abuse of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Pritzker rebuffed the White House on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/state-watch\/5467841-pritzker-opposes-trump-chicago-deployment\/\"><u>social media<\/u><\/a>.&nbsp;\u201cThe State of Illinois at this time has received no requests or outreach from the federal government asking if we need assistance, and we have made no requests for federal intervention,\u201d&nbsp;the governor posted on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The president says law and order, removal of homeless encampments and urban upkeep are his policy goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Justice Department and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DCPoliceUnion\/status\/1957435067258577173\"><u>D.C.\u2019s police union<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;released interim data showing a decrease in reported violent crimes and zero murders during the president\u2019s public safety crackdown. The union, the administration and Republicans in Congress want to repeal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcwashington.com\/news\/local\/dc-council-unanimously-passes-police-reform-legislation-amid-ongoing-protests\/2327213\/\"><u>the D.C. Council\u2019s police reforms<\/u><\/a>, passed in 2020 and again in 2022, as dangerously lenient, including with teenage carjackers, while being too restrictive with law enforcers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">While the president has boasted that Washington is crime free after just days of federal intervention,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/23\/politics\/dc-crime-immigration-arrests-trump\"><u>news outlets<\/u><\/a>, lawyers, advocacy groups and eyewitnesses assert a centerpiece of the government\u2019s crackdown in D.C. appears to be arrests of migrants without legal status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">As of Friday morning,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5466289-miller-trump-dc-crime-crackdown\/\"><u>300 of the 719 people<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;arrested in D.C. as part of the federal crackdown on crime were migrants without legal status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">White House immigration czar&nbsp;<strong>Tom Homan<\/strong>&nbsp;told&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/us-news\/military\/1700-troops-to-assist-ice-in-19-states\/\"><u>NewsNation<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;the administration envisions the deployment of 1,700 troops across 19 states as a \u201cforce multiplier\u201d for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u25aa&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/immigration\/ice-schools-first-day-washington-dc-immigration-agents-todd-lyons-rcna226516\"><u>NBC News<\/u><\/a>:&nbsp;ICE agents may enter D.C. schools this year, the federal government says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u25aa&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5466057-trump-plans-dc-beautification\/\"><u>The Hill<\/u><\/a>:&nbsp;Trump said he will request $2 billion from Congress for Washington, D.C., beautification and improvement projects and anticipates bipartisan support.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Trump in Los Angeles in June tested his federal authority to deploy active-duty Marines and National Guard members to bolster immigration enforcement amid pushback from Gov.&nbsp;<strong>Gavin Newsom<\/strong>&nbsp;(D), whose&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world-nation\/story\/2025-08-11\/trump-expands-l-a-military-tactics-by-sending-national-guard-to-washington-d-c\"><u>legal challenge<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;is being tested in the courts as the president expands his authority in the nation\u2019s capital.
