Mayor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/muriel-bowser\/\"><u>Muriel Bowser\u2002<\/u><\/a>(D) pushed for the District\u2019s statehood again on Tuesday amid&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/donald-trump\/\"><u>President Trump\u2019s\u2002<\/u><\/a>crackdown on the nation\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe have seen a precipitous lessening of crime in the city, violent crime, especially after a post-COVID spike that we acknowledge, and we got after, and we drove down the numbers in 2023. We reported last year the lowest level of violent crime in 30 years. So, we\u2019re not taking our foot off the gas,\u201d Bowser said on \u201cThe Breakfast Club\u201d radio show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe\u2019re continuing to work, but we think that this action kind of plays into his narrative about cities, about using force, about being tough on crime, and I can say a little bit more about why D.C. is different, but it\u2019s times like this when America needs to know why your nation\u2019s capital, a place where 700,000 taxpaying Americans live, should be the 51st state,\u201d Bowser said, referencing the president\u2019s recent moves on D.C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">While D.C. has three electoral votes in presidential elections, it does not have voting representatives in Congress and the federal government maintains a level of control over the District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">On Monday, Trump announced he was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5449526-bill-barr-trump-crime-dc\/\"><u>taking federal control<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of DC\u2019s police department and deploying the National Guard in the city to battle crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Bowser has pushed for D.C.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/state-watch\/533153-bowser-reiterates-call-for-dc-statehood-after-capitol-riots\/\"><u>statehood before<\/u><\/a>, notably following the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe must get statehood on the president\u2019s desk within the first 100 days of the 117th Congress,\u201d Bowser said in a press conference at the time. \u201cCongress must immediately transfer command of the District of Columbia National Guard from the president of the United States and put it squarely under the command and control of the District of Columbia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/state-watch\/5449556-bowser-re-ups-call-for-statehood-amid-trump-dc-crackdown\/\">thehill<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>D.C.
