{"id":45865,"date":"2025-08-08T04:23:22","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T09:23:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=45865"},"modified":"2025-08-08T04:24:36","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T09:24:36","slug":"trump-orders-increased-federal-law-enforcement-presence-in-d-c-after-decrying-crime-rate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=45865","title":{"rendered":"Trump orders increased federal law enforcement presence in D.C. after decrying crime rate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Federal agents are expected to have a much stronger and visible presence on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/trump-administration\/trump-threatens-dc-police-takeover-might-deploy-national-guard-rcna223535\">streets of Washington<\/a>&nbsp;starting Friday following several days of President Donald Trump\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/trump-administration\/trump-threatens-federal-control-dc-attack-doge-staffer-coristine-rcna223293\">bashing the city&#8217;s crime rate<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cPresident Trump has directed an increased presence of federal law enforcement to protect innocent citizens,\u201d White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement Thursday, calling the city \u201cplagued by violent crime for far too long.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cStarting tonight, there will be no safe harbor for violent criminals in D.C. President Trump is committed to making our Nation\u2019s capital safer for its residents, lawmakers, and visitors from all around the world,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A White House official said the seven-day effort, led by the U.S. Park Police, will focus on high-traffic tourist areas and other hot spots in the nation&#8217;s capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Federal officers &#8220;will be identified, in marked units, and highly visible,&#8221; the official said, adding that the operation beginning at 12 a.m. ET on Friday could extend beyond the weeklong period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Participating agents and officers will come from the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the FBI, the U.S. Capitol Police, the Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service, among others, the official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The number of participating agents was not specified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">It\u2019s also unclear whether they have been directed to engage in \u201cactivity\u201d beyond typical duties or what their role would be beyond being present on federal property, a Washington official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Trump signed an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/03\/making-the-district-of-columbia-safe-and-beautiful\/__;!!PIZeeW5wscynRQ!pRTjNdMgpSzotiTVKBGOePzW_2eXE7Tq21Hhr7T0YJPcVrHwyHYib5Zef1XFOW8I1Dm103tItruvYtlfbdXIBiXRbN6R7TBX$\">executive order this year\u2002<\/a>known as \u201cMaking the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful,\u201d which directs a task force to ensure federal involvement in enforcing U.S. immigration law, shifting available resources toward deporting undocumented immigrants in the Washington area and reviewing federal prosecution policies tied to pretrial detention, among other matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Trump in recent days has decried \u201ccrime\u201d in the district, even though&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mpdc.dc.gov\/dailycrime\">local police data<\/a>&nbsp;shows violent crime is down 26% compared with last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Trump has specifically cited a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/trump-administration\/trump-threatens-federal-control-dc-attack-doge-staffer-coristine-rcna223293\">recent attack on Edward Coristine<\/a>, a former employee of the Department of Government Efficiency also known by his online name, \u201cBig Balls,\u201d who was the victim of a carjacking and an assault last weekend, a police report said.
