{"id":45720,"date":"2025-08-04T18:59:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-04T23:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=45720"},"modified":"2025-08-05T01:00:53","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T06:00:53","slug":"proposed-rule-bans-nearly-all-abortions-at-va-hospitals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=45720","title":{"rendered":"Proposed rule bans nearly all abortions at VA hospitals\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Pregnant veterans would no longer be able to receive an&nbsp;abortion&nbsp;in a hospital operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs, including in cases of rape or incest or when a pregnancy threatens their health, the Trump administration proposed Monday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The VA said in the proposal that it is&nbsp;<strong>reversing&nbsp;<\/strong>a 2022 rule that for the first time allowed the department to provide abortions in limited circumstances to pregnant veterans and their eligible family members, even in states that banned abortion after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Between 1999 and 2022, the VA excluded almost all<strong>&nbsp;abortions<\/strong>&nbsp;and abortion counseling for veterans and their families from their medical benefits package.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">By reversing the rule, officials are seeking to ensure&nbsp;<strong>taxpayer dollars<\/strong>&nbsp;are not used to terminate pregnancies, according to a filing released Friday. They also called the Biden administration\u2019s decision to implement the interim rule \u201cinappropriate\u201d and \u201clegally questionable.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A&nbsp;<strong>final rule<\/strong>&nbsp;could come as soon as the public comment period on the measure closes on Sept. 3.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Reproductive rights groups said the move&nbsp;<strong>robbed<\/strong>&nbsp;service members of the ability to control their bodies and their futures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cSince taking office, the Trump administration has repeatedly attacked service members, veterans, and their families\u2019 access to basic reproductive care, including gender-affirming care,\u201d Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said, referring to the VA\u2019s decision in March to stop providing transgender veterans with hormone therapy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cTaking away access to health care shows us that the Trump administration will always put politics and retribution over people\u2019s lives.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Anti-abortion groups, meanwhile,&nbsp;<strong>applauded&nbsp;<\/strong>the Trump administration\u2019s decision, calling it a \u201cmajor win\u201d for the movement.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cInstead of prioritizing the real and urgent needs of our veterans, the Biden-Harris Administration turned VA hospitals into abortion centers \u2013 violating longstanding law and betraying the will of the American people who strongly&nbsp;<a href=\"#tax-funding\"><u>oppose<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;forced taxpayer-funded abortions,\u201d the anti-abortion group Susan B.
