{"id":45147,"date":"2025-07-23T04:17:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-23T09:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=45147"},"modified":"2025-07-23T04:17:03","modified_gmt":"2025-07-23T09:17:03","slug":"malcolm-jamal-warner-and-the-cosby-show-made-kids-with-learning-disabilities-feel-seen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=45147","title":{"rendered":"Malcolm-Jamal Warner and &#8216;The Cosby Show&#8217; made kids with learning disabilities feel seen"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">As&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/pop-culture\/pop-culture-news\/beyonce-dedicates-website-malcolm-jamal-warner-tributes-pour-actors-de-rcna220194\">tributes<\/a>&nbsp;to Malcolm-Jamal Warner pour in following his<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/obituaries\/malcolm-jamal-warner-actor-best-known-theo-cosby-show-dies-drowning-ac-rcna220055\">\u2002drowning<\/a>, fans and disability advocates are recalling the impact of seeing Theodore \u201cTheo\u201d Huxtable being diagnosed with dyslexia as a teen on \u201cThe Cosby Show.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The character\u2019s learning disability was actually based on Bill Cosby\u2019s own son, Ennis Cosby, who had the condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI think the turning point for Theo was when they diagnosed him with dyslexia,\u201d Warner said in a 2023 interview with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/sJl9fwB1l-A\">DCP Entertainment<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">People with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/6005-dyslexia\">dyslexia<\/a>&nbsp;struggle to understand written language, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Children diagnosed with this learning disability can work with an expert to bolster their reading skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A study from 2024 indicated that educators often fail to identify&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10693615\/\">African American children with dyslexia<\/a>. A missed or delayed diagnosis means students do not receive early interventions to help them with their reading skills and academic performance. This also affects their self-esteem, with many children with undiagnosed dyslexia thinking of \u201cthemselves as \u2018dumb,\u2019\u201d the study said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In the episode from 1989, Theo\u2019s parents seem happy that he received the diagnosis because they finally had an explanation for his academic struggles \u2014 and a way to address them. The plot line also touched on the emotional impact children and teens experience when they have difficulties reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI\u2019m not dumb, right?\u201d Warner explained about the joy Theo experienced after his diagnosis. \u201cWe can work this out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Warner also revealed that throughout his life people shared with him how that episode changed their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cPeople still tell me that it\u2019s because of your show that I found out that I had dyslexia,\u201d he told DCP Entertainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/vilissathompson\/status\/1947480561339019659?s=46\">Valissa Thompson<\/a>, a social worker and disability advocate, says that Theo\u2019s diagnosis with dyslexia was \u201cone of the first disability depictions [she] saw on TV.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThey did a really good job that was really respectful,\u201d she told TODAY.com. \u201cParticularly of the \u201980 and early \u201990s &#8230; people who are different and [have] disabilities \u2014 specifically invisible disabilities \u2014 may not have always been portrayed as kindly or thoughtfully.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">She added that Theo\u2019s story highlights the difficulty many families face with obtaining a dyslexia diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cEven in a well-to-do family, like the Huxtables represented, something like an invisible disability can go under the radar,\u201d she said. \u201cThat was very critical to show as well. Even when you have parents who went to college, [one] who\u2019s a doctor, they are not able to catch everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">It also shows the reality many Black families especially face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIt\u2019s not surprising that Theo went undiagnosed,\u201d she explained. \u201cWe have an &#8230; under-diagnosis problem among our Black kids in society, whether back in the \u201980s or in the 2020s.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Thompson hopes that as people reflect on Warner\u2019s work and his role as Theo, they consider the power of showing realistic and fully-fleshed out disabled characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe need more intentional representation. And when I say intentional, I mean the representation that doesn\u2019t lead harshly into the stereotypes of helplessness or being a villain,\u201d she said. \u201cJust being nuanced like Theo.
