{"id":45122,"date":"2025-07-22T18:29:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-22T23:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=45122"},"modified":"2025-07-23T05:12:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-23T10:12:10","slug":"trans-women-athletes-to-face-exclusion-from-olympic-paralympic-activities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=45122","title":{"rendered":"Trans women athletes to face exclusion from Olympic, Paralympic activities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Transgender women athletes will now face exclusion from U.S. Olympic and Paralympic activities, according to new&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.contentstack.io\/v3\/assets\/blt9e58afd92a18a0fc\/bltf456568858cc9c12\/USOPC_Athlete_Safety_Policy.pdf\"><u>policy from the<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;United States Olympic &amp; Paralympic Committee (USOPC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIn our world of elite sport, these elements of fairness demand that we reconcile athlete inclusion and athlete opportunity,\u201d reads a statement on the USOPC website. \u201cThe only way to do that for all genders, and specifically for those who are transgender, is to rely on real data and science-based evidence rather than ideology. That means making science-based decisions, sport by sport and discipline by discipline, within both the Olympic and Paralympic movements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A Monday note&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usopc.org\/diversity-equity-inclusion\/transgender-athlete-participation-in-sport\"><u>on a page about<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;\u201ctransgender athlete participation in sport\u201d reads \u201cplease refer to the USOPC athlete safety policy\u201d and links a document, a portion of which states it \u201cwill continue to collaborate with various stakeholders with oversight responsibilities\u201d to guarantee \u201cthat women have a fair and safe competition environment consistent with Executive Order 14201.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2025\/02\/11\/2025-02513\/keeping-men-out-of-womens-sports\"><u>Executive Order 14201<\/u><\/a>, titled \u201cKeeping Men Out of Women\u2019s Sports,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/donald-trump\/\"><u>President Trump\u2002<\/u><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/lgbtq\/5342310-transgender-rights-gender-identity-gallup\/\"><u>stated the U.S. is against<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;\u201cmale competitive participation in women\u2019s sports\u201d as a matter \u201cof safety, fairness, dignity, and truth.\u201d The order bars&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/lgbtq\/5129040-trump-executive-order-transgender-athletes-2028-olympics\/\"><u>trans athletes from\u2002<\/u><\/a>competing in girls\u2019 and women\u2019s sports.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The new policy was first&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/07\/22\/us\/politics\/us-olympics-trans-women-athletes-ban-trump.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&amp;referringSource=articleShare\"><u>reported by The New York Times.<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Trump said in February that his administration will not let transgender athletes compete in the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A USOPC spokesperson said the organization notified its \u201ccommunity of stakeholders\u201d of the new policy via email on Tuesday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cAs many of you are aware, the Administration issued Executive Order 14201 earlier this year aimed at protecting women\u2019s sport. Since then, the USOPC has engaged in a series of respectful and constructive conversations with federal officials,\u201d USOPC President Gene Sykes and CEO Sarah Hirshland wrote in the email, a copy of which was obtained by The Hill.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cAs a federally chartered organization, we have an obligation to comply with federal expectations,\u201d they wrote, adding further down, \u201cOur revised policy emphasizes the importance of ensuring fair and safe competition environments for women. All National Governing Bodies are required to update their applicable policies in alignment.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Sykes and Hirshland\u2019s statement does not say whether the policy change will impact female athletes with differences in sex development (DSD).
