Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem criticized a ruling from a federal judge that bars the Trump administration from using \u201cunconstitutional\u201d immigration enforcement efforts in parts of California, saying judges are \u201cgetting political\u201d and that it is \u201cnot their job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During an interview on \u201cFox News Sunday<\/u><\/a>,\u201d Noem was asked about the Friday ruling<\/u><\/a> from U.S. District Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong, an appointee of former President Biden. The order granted two temporary restraining orders<\/u><\/a> preventing officials from targeting individuals for removal on the basis of race, language or employment and requiring the Department of Homeland Security to grant detainees access to legal counsel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWell, this federal judge\u2019s ruling is ridiculous. We never ran our operations that way,\u201d Noem said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe\u2019ve seen this across the country over and over and over again, where judges are getting political. It\u2019s not their job,\u201d she added. \u201cI hope they can bring some dignity back to the bench because we\u2019re lacking it now for many of these federal judges.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Noem said the judge\u2019s ruling is \u201cwrong\u201d and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) does not target individuals on the basis of race, language or employment, adding that they will win their case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt\u2019s been done exactly how law enforcement has operated for many years in this country, and ICE is out there making sure we get the worst off the streets,\u201d she added. \u201cSo this judge made a decision that we will appeal and we will win, because he\u2019s wrong. We\u2019ve never targeted individuals based on those qualifications that he laid out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Her statement follows a Fox News interview with President Trump\u2019s border czar Tom Homan, who said that federal immigration agents do not need probable cause to detain people for a short period and that agents can \u201cjust go through the observations, get articulable facts, based on their location, their occupation, their physical appearance, their actions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cPeople need to understand, ICE officers and Border Patrol don\u2019t need probable cause to walk up to somebody, briefly detain them, and question them,\u201d he said on \u201cFox & Friends\u201d on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His statement comes weeks after protests in Los Angeles<\/u><\/a> and surrounding areas erupted over an uptick in ICE raids<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
