Former Treasury Secretary Jack Lew\u2002<\/u><\/a>slammed New York City Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani\u2002<\/u><\/a>for his policy proposals based on socialist initiatives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mamdani has promised to push for free buses, free child care and rent freezes if elected to office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe policies that he\u2019s outlined are not policies that are good for New York. He\u2019s running for mayor of New York, and I worry deeply having spent most of my life in New York about a city that I call home,\u201d Lew, who served in the Obama\u2002<\/u><\/a>administration, said during a Wednesday appearance on CNBC<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou know, I see a similarity between the kind of policy solutions to the left and the right, and \u2014 you know, that satisfy populist sentiment don\u2019t always go through the filter of do they work. I don\u2019t think they work, and I think that\u2019s a problem,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Republicans, including the president<\/u><\/a>, have openly railed against Mamdani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs President of the United States, I\u2019m not going to let this Communist Lunatic destroy New York,\u201d President Trump\u2002<\/u><\/a>wrote in a Wednesday post on Truth Social, referencing Mamdani. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRest assured, I hold all the levers, and have all the cards. I\u2019ll save New York City, and make it \u2018Hot\u2019 and \u2018Great\u2019 again, just like I did with the Good Ol\u2019 USA!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Others have alleged that Mamdani, a Muslim, is antisemitic and criticized him for urging the U.S. to recognize Palestine as a state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the most frequent point of contention remains his economic policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou might have a democratic socialist sprinkled here and there, but that ain\u2019t what America is. America\u2019s about capitalism! America\u2019s about dollars and cents,\u201d Stephen A. Smith\u2002<\/u><\/a>said during his Tuesday show<\/u><\/a>, urging Democrats not to promote others like Mamdani. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite critiques, Mamdani edged out former Gov. Andrew Cuomo\u2002<\/u><\/a>(D) in the Democratic primary and captured a majority of the votes<\/u><\/a> from the Washington Heights, Flatbush, Williamsburg, Astoria, Park Slope, Bedford-Stuyvesant and Crown Heights neighborhoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve already had to start to get used to the fact that the president will talk about how I look, how I sound, where I\u2019m from, who I am,\u201d Mamdani said about Trump\u2019s remarks during a Sunday appearance on MSNBC\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe wants to distract from what I\u2019m fighting for. I\u2019m fighting for the very working people he ran a campaign to empower that he has since then betrayed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two have already publicly clashed over Mamdani\u2019s promise to help New York City remain a sanctuary city if elected as mayor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
