{"id":44040,"date":"2025-06-26T20:18:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-27T01:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=44040"},"modified":"2025-06-26T21:19:39","modified_gmt":"2025-06-27T02:19:39","slug":"briefing-on-iran-strikes-leaves-senators-divided-as-trump-threatens-new-row","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=44040","title":{"rendered":"Briefing on Iran strikes leaves senators divided as Trump threatens new row"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Partisan splits on display as president accuses Democrats of leaking draft Pentagon report on bombings\u2019 impact<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Republican and Democratic senators have offered starkly contrasting interpretations of Donald Trump\u2019s bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities after a delayed behind-closed-doors intelligence briefing that the White House had earlier postponed amid accusations of leaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Thursday\u2019s session with senior national security officials came after the White House moved back its briefing, originally scheduled for Tuesday, fueling Democratic complaints that Trump was stonewalling Congress over&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/jun\/25\/trump-and-hegseth-admit-doubts-over-irans-nuclear-sites-damage-by-us-strikes\">military action<\/a>&nbsp;the president authorized without congressional approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cSenators deserve full transparency, and the administration has a legal obligation to inform Congress precisely about what is happening,\u201d the Senate Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer, said following the initial postponement, which he termed \u201coutrageous\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Even as senators were being briefed, Trump reignited the row with a Truth Social post accusing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/democrats\">Democrats<\/a>&nbsp;of leaking a draft Pentagon report that suggested last weekend\u2019s strikes had only set back Iran\u2019s nuclear program by months \u2013 contradicting the president\u2019s insistence that it was \u201cobliterated\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe Democrats are the ones who leaked the information on the PERFECT FLIGHT to the Nuclear Sites in Iran. They should be prosecuted!\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114751173173020083\">he wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The partisan divisions were on display after the briefing, which was staged in the absence of Tulsi Gabbard, the director of national intelligence, who previously told Congress that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/iran\">Iran<\/a>&nbsp;was not building nuclear weapons, before changing her tune last week after Trump said she was \u201cwrong\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Instead, the briefing was led by CIA director John Ratcliffe, secretary of state Marco Rubio and defense secretary&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/pete-hegseth\">Pete Hegseth<\/a>, who had publicly assailed journalists over their reporting on the strikes at a Pentagon press conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">With intelligence agencies apparently in open dispute over the strikes\u2019 effectiveness, Thursday\u2019s briefing did little to clear up the clashing interpretations on Capitol Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina senator and close Trump ally, said \u201cobliteration\u201d was a \u201cgood word\u201d to describe the strikes\u2019 impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThey blew these places up in a major-league way. They set them back years, not months,\u201d he said. \u201cNobody is going to work in these three sites any time soon. Their operational capability was obliterated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But he warned that Iran would be likely to try to reconstitute them, adding: \u201cHave we obliterated their desire to have a nuclear weapon? As long as they desire one, as long as they want to kill all the Jews, you still have a problem on your hands. I don\u2019t want the American people to think this is over.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, said Trump was \u201cmisleading the public\u201d in claiming the program was obliterated and questioned why Gabbard had not attended the briefing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">His skepticism was echoed by Schumer, who said the briefing gave \u201cno adequate answer\u201d to questions about Trump\u2019s claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWhat was clear is that there was no coherent strategy, no endgame, no plan, no specific[s], no detailed plan on how Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon,\u201d he said, adding that Congress needed to assert its authority by enforcing the War Powers Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Gabbard and Ratcliffe had scrambled on Wednesday to back Trump, with Gabbard&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DNIGabbard\/status\/1937934899710710170\">posting on X<\/a>: \u201cNew intelligence confirms what POTUS has stated numerous times: Iran\u2019s nuclear facilities have been destroyed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The ranking Democrat on the House intelligence committee, Jim Himes, dismissed the destruction claims as meaningless. \u201cThe only question that matters is whether the Iranian regime has the stuff necessary to build a bomb, and if so, how fast,\u201d he posted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The destruction response has also rankled Republican senators in the anti-interventionist wing of the party such as Rand Paul, who rejected claims of absolute presidential war powers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI think the speaker needs to review the constitution,\u201d said Paul. \u201cAnd I think there\u2019s a lot of evidence that our founding fathers did not want presidents to unilaterally go to war.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Senate is expected to vote this week on a resolution requiring congressional approval for future military action against Iran, though the measure appears unlikely to pass given Republican control of the chamber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The White House also admitted on Thursday to restricting intelligence sharing after news of the draft assessment leaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters the administration wants to ensure \u201cclassified intelligence is not ending up in irresponsible hands\u201d. Leavitt later said the US assessed that there \u201cwas no indication\u201d enriched uranium was moved from the nuclear sites in Iran ahead of the strikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Trump formally notified Congress of the strikes in a brief letter sent on Monday, two days after the bombing, saying the action was taken \u201cto advance vital United States national interests, and in collective self-defense of our ally, Israel, by eliminating Iran\u2019s nuclear program\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The administration says it remains \u201con a diplomatic path with Iran\u201d through special envoy Steve Witkoff\u2019s communications with Iranian officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jun\/26\/trump-iran-strikes-intelligence-congress\">theguardian<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Partisan splits on display as president accuses Democrats of leaking draft Pentagon report on bombings\u2019 impact Republican and Democratic senators have offered starkly contrasting interpretations of Donald Trump\u2019s bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities after a delayed behind-closed-doors intelligence briefing that the White House had earlier postponed amid accusations of leaks.
