{"id":43595,"date":"2025-06-16T15:28:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-16T20:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=43595"},"modified":"2025-06-16T22:29:45","modified_gmt":"2025-06-17T03:29:45","slug":"judge-dismisses-columbia-university-faculty-lawsuit-over-trump-funding-cuts-demands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=43595","title":{"rendered":"Judge dismisses Columbia University faculty lawsuit over Trump funding cuts, demands"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">NEW YORK, June 16 (Reuters) &#8211; A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit against the Trump administration by two labor unions for Columbia University faculty that challenged&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/us-cancels-400-million-grants-contracts-columbia-university-over-antisemitism-2025-03-07\/\"><u>funding cuts<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;and demands to overhaul student discipline and boost oversight for a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/\"><u>Middle Eastern<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;studies department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">U.S. District Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil in Manhattan said the American Association of University Professors and the American Federation of Teachers lacked legal standing to sue, with Columbia itself &#8220;conspicuously absent&#8221; from the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;Our democracy cannot very well function if individual judges issue extraordinary relief to every plaintiff who clamors to object to executive action,&#8221; Vyskocil wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;If any funds have been wrongfully withheld, such funds may be recovered at the end of a successful lawsuit by the appropriate plaintiff in an appropriate forum,&#8221; she added. &#8220;It is not the role of a district court judge to direct the policies of the Executive Branch first and ask questions later.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Both plaintiffs plan to appeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;The Trump administration&#8217;s threats and coercion at Columbia University are part of an authoritarian agenda that extends far beyond Columbia,&#8221; Todd Wolfson, president of the professors&#8217; union, said in a statement. &#8220;We will continue to fight back.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Vyskocil, a Trump appointee, ruled 12 days after the Department of Education threatened to revoke&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/us-education-department-says-columbia-university-violated-federal-anti-2025-06-04\/\"><u>Columbia&#8217;s accreditation<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;over the university&#8217;s alleged failure to protect Jewish students, including from pro-Palestinian protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Columbia was the first major U.S. university targeted in President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/donald-trump\/\"><u>Donald Trump&#8217;s<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;effort to conform higher education to his policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">It has acceded to some White House demands, including by boosting security and announcing a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/president.columbia.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/content\/03.21.2025 Columbia - FINAL.pdf\"><u>review, opens new tab<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of its Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Other schools, including Harvard University, have fought Trump in court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The labor unions&#8217;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/columbia-faculty-groups-sue-trump-administration-over-funding-cuts-academic-2025-03-25\/\"><u>lawsuit<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;originally targeted $400 million of Columbia funding cuts, and later sought an injunction to prevent the Trump administration from interfering with more than $5 billion of grants and contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Vyskocil said that to the extent the unions &#8220;feel chilled&#8221; by recent changes at Columbia, they have not shown that the changes were &#8220;merely the &#8216;predictable&#8217; response&#8221; to White House demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The case is American Association of University Professors et al v.
