{"id":43483,"date":"2025-06-14T01:06:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-14T06:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=43483"},"modified":"2025-06-14T02:31:46","modified_gmt":"2025-06-14T07:31:46","slug":"judge-blocks-state-department-from-firing-workers-while-injunction-is-in-effect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=43483","title":{"rendered":"Judge blocks State Department from firing workers while injunction is in effect"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">A federal judge in San Francisco on Friday stopped Secretary of State Marco Rubio from proceeding with plans to downsize the State Department, saying that it was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-mass-firings-doge-lawsuit-b41f5b43f428965fd60bc272e3854e3b\">prohibited behavior<\/a>&nbsp;under an injunction she issued last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. District Judge Susan Illston barred the Republican administration from carrying out much of its plans to reorganize and slash departments while she hears a legal challenge brought by labor unions and others. She said that President Donald Trump had failed to seek Congressional cooperation to do so when he ordered government-wide cuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">But, in late May, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/state-department-reorganization-rubio-trump-d1c4098578b16f31ab34d700766fe615\">State Department notified Congress<\/a>&nbsp;of an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/state-department-rubio-reorganization-trump-usaid-3fc186fefddaaa72c3040db9fb380af4\">updated reorganization<\/a>&nbsp;of the agency that would cut programs and personnel even more deeply than previously revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Rubio this week also ordered&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/usaid-firings-rubio-trump-c1b34c9ba9ffaa2153364eebb115fde9\">U.S. embassies to fire<\/a>&nbsp;all remaining staffers with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/us-agency-for-international-development\">U.S. Agency for International Development<\/a>. He said the State Department will take over USAID\u2019s foreign assistance programs by Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The Trump administration said Rubio had launched a reorganization of the State Department independently of the president&#8217;s directive and so was exempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Illston, who was nominated to the bench by former President Bill Clinton, a Democrat, was not convinced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf the State Department has any question about whether planned actions fall within the scope of the Court\u2019s injunction, the Court ORDERS the Department to first raise those questions with the Court before taking action,\u201d she wrote in an order issued Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/wireStory\/judge-blocks-state-department-firing-workers-injunction-effect-122832335\">abcnews<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A federal judge in San Francisco on Friday stopped Secretary of State Marco Rubio from proceeding with plans to downsize the State Department, saying that it was&nbsp;prohibited behavior&nbsp;under an injunction she issued last month.
