{"id":43266,"date":"2025-06-08T18:55:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-08T23:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=43266"},"modified":"2025-06-09T04:45:40","modified_gmt":"2025-06-09T09:45:40","slug":"judge-declines-to-block-trumps-corporation-for-public-broadcasting-board-firings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=43266","title":{"rendered":"Judge declines to block Trump\u2019s Corporation for Public Broadcasting board firings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A federal judge on Sunday declined to block&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/donald-trump\/\"><u>President Trump\u2019s\u2002<\/u><\/a>removal of three board members of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), ruling the plaintiffs failed to demonstrate a strong likelihood the firings were unlawful or that they would suffer irreparable harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But CPB officials celebrated the ruling as a win, pointing to part of the ruling that acknowledges that \u201cCongress intended to preclude the President (or any subordinate officials acting at his direction) from directing, supervising, or controlling the Corporation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Following the ruling, CPB President and CEO Patricia Harrison signed a document affirming that the three members remain on the board, according a source familiar.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss in Washington, D.C., rejected a request for a preliminary injunction filed by the three board members \u2014 Laura Ross, Diane Kaplan and Thomas Rothman \u2014 who&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/media\/5275384-corporation-for-public-broadcasting-sues-over-trump-board-firings-plan\/\"><u>sued the Trump administration<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;after receiving termination notices via email on April 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In the lawsuit, the CPB board members argued the president lacked the authority to remove them from their position and noted that the corporation, which was created by Congress in 1967, was designed to be protected from political interference. It is the largest single source of funding for public news outlets, including PBS and NPR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe credible and urgent threats facing CPB, as a result of the Correspondence are not speculative or theoretical. To the contrary, such threats are well-grounded in the administration\u2019s recent terminations of board members at other congressionally-created organizations,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.dcd.279991\/gov.uscourts.dcd.279991.1.0.pdf\"><u>they argued in the lawsuit<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Moss was not convinced Trump\u2019s move would bring about any immediate, irreparable harm, and he indicated Trump may indeed have the authority to remove them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cFor present purposes and on the present record, it is enough to conclude that Plaintiffs have failed to carry their burden of demonstrating that they are likely to prevail on the merits of their claim for injunctive relief or that Plaintiffs are likely to suffer irreparable harm in the absence of preliminary relief,\u201d the judge\u2019s opinion reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The suit comes as Trump has urged Congress to defund public broadcasters and his Federal Communications Commission chair has vowed to investigate outlets like NPR and PBS over their donation models and perceived editorial bias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Trump and his allies have long said public broadcasters are biased against conservatives and that taxpayers should not have to underwrite their operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Harrison said the CBP was pleased by part of the ruling, despite the board members failing to win an injunction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe are very pleased that the Court recognized CPB is an&nbsp;independent, nonprofit corporation, free from governmental control or influence,\u201d she said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cCPB, board and management, look&nbsp;forward to continuing our work with policymakers and other stakeholders to ensure accurate, unbiased and nonpartisan public media is available for all Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/court-battles\/5339507-federal-judge-deny-trump-cpb-firing\/\">thehill<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A federal judge on Sunday declined to block&nbsp;President Trump\u2019s\u2002removal of three board members of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), ruling the plaintiffs failed to demonstrate a strong likelihood the firings were unlawful or that they would suffer irreparable harm.
