{"id":42970,"date":"2025-06-01T02:41:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-01T07:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=42970"},"modified":"2025-06-03T00:26:02","modified_gmt":"2025-06-03T05:26:02","slug":"federal-food-aid-cuts-will-cause-americas-hunger-crisis-to-skyrocket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=42970","title":{"rendered":"Federal food aid cuts will cause America\u2019s hunger crisis to skyrocket"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailytable.org\/\"><u>\u2002Daily Table<\/u><\/a>, one of the largest food banks in Boston, recently announced it was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailytable.org\/store-closing\"><u>\u2002closing its doors<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;after serving more than 3 million people throughout the city over the past decade.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The organization cited high food prices and an \u201cuncertain funding environment\u201d as the main reasons. \u201cWithout immediate funding to bridge us through 2025, we cannot continue,\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailytable.org\/store-closing\"><u>\u2002read<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;the group\u2019s farewell note to supporters.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Pantries like the Daily Table across the country are struggling to stay open after the U.S. Department of Agriculture quietly<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/trump-cuts-hit-struggling-food-banks-risking-hunger-low-income-americans-2025-03-25\/\"><u>\u2002cut<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;$1 billion in 2025 funding back in March for food relief programs that have historically supported the nation\u2019s most disadvantaged communities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Specifically, the USDA abruptly<a href=\"https:\/\/eji.org\/news\/hunger-in-america-on-the-rise-as-usda-cuts-food-bank-funding\/\"><u>\u2002slashed<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;the Emergency Food Assistance Program, which supported food banks in addressing the growing hunger crisis in America.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The agency also<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/03\/31\/funding-cuts-food-banks-farmers\/82705776007\/\"><u>\u2002canceled<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;the Local Food for Schools Cooperative Agreement and the Local Food Purchase Assistance Program, USDA-led initiatives that paid farmers and ranchers to produce the food that pantries and schools distributed to those in need.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201c[Funding] is no longer available and those agreements will be terminated following 60-day notification,\u201d a USDA spokesperson bluntly<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/03\/10\/usda-cancels-local-food-purchasing-for-schools-food-banks-00222796\"><u>\u2002told<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;Politico when the cuts were discovered.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Food banks depend on federal funding to help those in need. The USDA cuts have hit these organizations hard, stifling their ability to fulfill their missions in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/28\/us\/politics\/food-banks-trump-cuts-aid.html\"><u>\u2002West Virginia<\/u><\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/nysfocus.com\/2025\/05\/14\/new-york-food-banks-cuts-tariffs-trump\"><u>\u2002New York<\/u><\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/politics\/2025\/03\/california-food-banks-cuts\/\"><u>\u2002California<\/u><\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/marylandmatters.org\/2025\/04\/14\/local-farmers-food-banks-plan-for-potential-blow-to-food-assistance-output-from-trump-cut\/\"><u>\u2002Maryland<\/u><\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cascadepbs.org\/politics\/2025\/04\/usda-set-cut-1b-food-programs-wa-food-banks-are-worried\"><u>\u2002Washington<\/u><\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesmanjournal.com\/story\/news\/local\/2025\/04\/07\/usda-program-cuts-food-banks-oregon\/82706142007\/\"><u>\u2002Oregon<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;and beyond. Three District of Columbia-area food banks have delivered 1.4 million<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2025\/05\/19\/dc-food-bank-cuts\/\"><u>\u2002fewer<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;meals since the USDA action, and these numbers are certain to grow.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The need for food banks has<a href=\"https:\/\/kffhealthnews.org\/news\/article\/food-banks-snap-benefits-federal-cuts-rural-needs\/\"><u>\u2002never been greater<\/u><\/a>. According to the USDA\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/topics\/food-nutrition-assistance\/food-security-in-the-us\/key-statistics-graphics\"><u>\u2002own data<\/u><\/a>, over 47 million people resided in food-insecure households in 2023. Demand in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kffhealthnews.org\/news\/article\/food-banks-snap-benefits-federal-cuts-rural-needs\/\"><u>Nebraska<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;is four times greater than it was in 2018, while some food pantries in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kffhealthnews.org\/news\/article\/food-banks-snap-benefits-federal-cuts-rural-needs\/\"><u>Texas<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;are serving 25 percent more people today than before the pandemic.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">And in what may be the most troubling statistic of all, nearly half of the residents in Kentucky and Indiana<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wdrb.com\/news\/many-kentuckiana-residents-face-choosing-between-buying-food-or-paying-utilities\/article_a06739f8-f3b8-11ef-aee5-17498b7bcc98.html\"><u>\u2002face an impossible choice<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of either paying for food or covering their utility bills.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The USDA actions were a potential blow to farmers \u2014 a constituency the Trump administration has<a href=\"https:\/\/capitalpress.com\/2025\/04\/16\/trump-says-usa-will-protect-our-farmers\/\"><u>\u2002vowed to protect<\/u><\/a>. They also defy the Trump administration\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usda.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/farmers-first-small-family-farms-policy-agenda.pdf\"><u>Farmers First<\/u><\/a>\u201d agenda.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe defense of the family farm is a defense of everything America has been \u2014 and everything we will be,\u201d wrote USDA Secretary Brooke L. Rollins in announcing the imperative. \u201cIt is my privilege to come to their defense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Canceling these programs is a slap in the face to every farmer who relies on federal support to help vulnerable Americans receive the food they need to survive. These economic initiatives drive local agriculture and are a vital source of revenue, especially for small farm operators.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The USDA cuts deepen the impact for those who already lack access to healthy meals. Before the USDA rollbacks began, nearly 10 million children were<a href=\"#:~:text=This means that approximately 9.5,on during the school year.\"><u>\u2002at risk<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of going hungry this summer due to states opting out of the Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer program. Eliminating federal support for food banks will make their untenable situation even worse.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">And if House Republicans move forward with a plan to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/21\/politics\/medicaid-food-stamps-gop-proposed-cuts\"><u>\u2002decimate<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program in their proposed budget bill, the hunger crisis in America could become a full-blown emergency.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">SNAP<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiplinger.com\/taxes\/millions-could-lose-snap-food-benefits-under-trump\"><u>\u2002currently helps<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;40 million low-income families afford groceries every month. The House bill, if approved,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiplinger.com\/taxes\/millions-could-lose-snap-food-benefits-under-trump\"><u>would gut<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;the program by more than $<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/nexstar_media_wire\/5311920-snap-changes-proposed-in-gops-big-beautiful-bill-heres-what-to-know\/amp\/\"><u>260 billion<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;over the next 10 years to help offset the Trump administration\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/05\/21\/snap-benefits-food-stamps-face-cuts-under-gop-tax-bill.html\"><u>\u2002tax cut proposals<\/u><\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The House GOP plan puts an<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/business\/budget\/5308446-trump-gop-bill-medicaid-salt-taxes\/\"><u>\u2002added burden<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;on states to make up the difference in SNAP support, many of which are financially strapped and won\u2019t be able to cover the funding gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The USDA cuts come at a time when food prices are expected to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiplinger.com\/taxes\/millions-could-lose-snap-food-benefits-under-trump\"><u>\u2002rise<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;3.5 percent in 2025 alone due to recent tariff increases.
