Spotty youths who engaged in risky behaviour outside the house\u2014getting drunk, pregnant or into car crashes\u2014were \u201cthe number one fear of American citizens\u201d, wrote Bill Bryson in his memoir, \u201cThe Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid\u201d. Today, the risks American teenagers face come from themselves. Boys are more likely to kill themselves than to be killed in a motor crash. Girls are nearly 50% more likely to injure themselves in a suicide attempt than to face an unplanned pregnancy.
