{"id":42769,"date":"2025-05-27T04:33:15","date_gmt":"2025-05-27T09:33:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=42769"},"modified":"2025-05-27T04:33:18","modified_gmt":"2025-05-27T09:33:18","slug":"harvard-revokes-tenure-from-professor-famous-for-ethics-studies-first-time-in-80-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=42769","title":{"rendered":"Harvard revokes tenure from professor famous for ethics studies, first time in 80 years"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Harvard University revoked the tenure of Harvard Business School professor Francesca Gino after years of data fraud allegations, a university spokesperson confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Gino, widely known for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/art-deception-creative-types-are-bigger-liars-flna1c6436870\">researching honesty and ethical behavior<\/a>, was placed on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pon.harvard.edu\/faculty\/francesca-gino\/\">administrative leave<\/a>&nbsp;in 2023 after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/a-weird-research-misconduct-scandal-about-dishonesty-just-got-weirder?bc_nonce=w4vmxak0fyovu6kcsddti&amp;cid=reg_wall_signup\">multiple allegations<\/a>&nbsp;of falsifying data surfaced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A spokesperson for Harvard provided no additional details, noting that it does not discuss personnel matters. Gino also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">No professors are known to have lost their tenure at Harvard since the 1940s, when the American Association of University Professors formalized&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaup.org\/report\/1940-statement-principles-academic-freedom-and-tenure-1970-interpretive-comments\">rules of termination<\/a>, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2025\/5\/27\/gino-tenure-revoked\/\">The Harvard Crimson<\/a>, the student newspaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Gino started working at Harvard Business School in 2010 as an associate professor of business administration, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/55dcde36e4b0df55a96ab220\/t\/649c8b5c9c94f26205b41c91\/1687980892866\/GinoCV_June2023.pdf\">her extensive r\u00e9sum\u00e9<\/a>, updated in June 2023. From 2018 to 2021, she was the head of the Negotiations, Organizations and Markets Unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Gino\u2019s research has been widely featured in the media, such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/art-deception-creative-types-are-bigger-liars-flna1c6436870\">NBC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In 2021, three professors and behavioral researchers with a blog site,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/datacolada.org\/109\">Data Colada<\/a>, began examining a number of studies Gino co-authored over a decade and shared evidence they believed proved fraudulent data with the business school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">According to a 2023 blog post in which the researchers posted their evidence, the rest of their interactions with the university after they shared their 2021 report were confidential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Gino was placed on unpaid administrative leave in June 2023 after an 18-month internal investigation found she was responsible for &#8220;research misconduct,&#8221; according to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/64e37384f8314c0ebe1a5469\/t\/6505dc466e0e9935261342d2\/1694882888120\/Complaint.pdf\">$25 million lawsuit Gino filed<\/a>&nbsp;against Harvard and Data Colada. She lost her titled professorship and was removed from all teaching and research duties, the suit read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The suit claimed the investigation was conducted in adherence with a new employment policy that was created just for her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A federal judge dismissed the defamation allegations of Gino&#8217;s suit in September but allowed claims that Harvard breached its contract with Gino by disciplining her in ways that violated its own tenure policies,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2024\/9\/12\/judge-dismisses-gino-lawsuit-defamation-charges\/\">the Crimson reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Gino launched a website&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.francesca-v-harvard.org\/\">dedicated to the lawsuit<\/a>, with the last update in March 2024 reading: &#8220;Harvard shared their case.
