{"id":42738,"date":"2025-05-26T13:10:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-26T18:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=42738"},"modified":"2025-05-26T22:39:23","modified_gmt":"2025-05-27T03:39:23","slug":"republicans-face-a-future-without-elon-musks-money","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=42738","title":{"rendered":"Republicans face a future without Elon Musk\u2019s money"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Tech billionaire&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/elon-musk\/\"><u>Elon Musk\u2002<\/u><\/a>is prompting questions about his next steps as he signals he might wind down his political activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Last week, the Tesla CEO said he\u2019s planning to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/ap\/ap-business\/ap-elon-musk-says-he-will-cut-back-on-political-spending-after-heavily-backing-trump-in-2024-2\/\"><u>scale back his spending<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/ap\/ap-business\/ap-elon-musks-pac-spent-an-estimated-200-million-to-help-elect-trump-ap-source-says\/\"><u>injecting hundreds of millions of dollars<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;into the 2024 election, a big potential blow for GOP campaign coffers moving forward.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The announcement comes as Musk also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/5261988-musk-says-time-spent-on-doge-will-drop-next-month-as-tesla-sales-plunge\/\"><u>cools his involvement<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in the Trump White House to turn more attention to his businesses \u2014 even as voices on both sides of the aisle are skeptical that the megadonor will make a full exit from politics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cAnytime the biggest donor says he\u2019s going to pull back, that\u2019s a concern for the party,\u201d GOP strategist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/alex-conant\/\"><u>Alex Conant\u2002<\/u><\/a>said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThese megadonors, you have to earn their support every cycle. The party can\u2019t and doesn\u2019t take them for granted. He says he\u2019s planning to pull back, but if we have a presidential nominee in \u201828 that excites Musk, you could see him doubling down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Musk, the world\u2019s richest man with a staggering&nbsp;<a href=\"#614b55033d78\"><u>$420 billion\u2002net worth<\/u><\/a>, according to Forbes, spent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/5026691-elon-musk-donates-trump-campaign\/\"><u>at least $250 million<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;through his America PAC to boost President Trump. Now that Trump is back in the Oval Office, Musk has embraced an unprecedented role in the new Republican administration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The tech mogul was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/newsletters\/technology\/5278465-musk-reflects-on-100-days-of-doge\/\"><u>tapped to lead<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;Trump\u2019s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative, championing controversial cost-cutting and workforce-reducing moves that have sent shockwaves throughout the federal government.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Musk&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/13\/us\/politics\/elon-musk-white-house-trump.html\"><u>keeps an\u2002office<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in the White House complex,<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5276474-musk-white-house-lincoln-bedroom\/\"><u>has\u2002slept over<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in the Lincoln Bedroom and has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2025\/05\/01\/hagen-dazsand-buddha-elon-musk-waxes-philosophical-his-time-with-trump\/\"><u>characterized\u2002his relationship<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;with the president as \u201cgood friends.\u201d He\u2019s even stolen the spotlight&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5163375-musk-trump-cabinet-meeting\/\"><u>in Cabinet meetings<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 though, as a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5133335-elon-musk-government-power-grab\/\"><u>special government employee<\/u><\/a>, he is not a formal member of that inner circle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI don\u2019t think we\u2019ve ever seen somebody with an unofficial role have that much day-to-day influence. He\u2019s at the Cabinet meetings. He\u2019s at diplomatic meetings [and he\u2019s] traveling with the president regularly. I can\u2019t think of any historical parallel to that. He got an office there. So I think it\u2019s a very unique situation that probably isn\u2019t sustainable,\u201d Conant said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Musk\u2019s special government status has a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/5242406-house-democrats-demand-musk-resignation\/\"><u>130-day limit<\/u><\/a>, and he\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/5261604-democratic-state-treasurers-tesla-musk\/\"><u>been facing\u2002pressure<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;to put&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/5261988-musk-says-time-spent-on-doge-will-drop-next-month-as-tesla-sales-plunge\/\"><u>more focus on<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;his companies after months of major work with DOGE.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Tesla showrooms and charging stations&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/5208180-elona-musk-tesla-violent-protests\/\"><u>faced\u2002violent protests<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;earlier this year amid anger over DOGE\u2019s efforts, and the electric vehicle company\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/5260868-tesla-earnings-drop\/\"><u>sales plummeted<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in the first quarter. An Axios\/Harris Poll survey gauging brand reputations, out last week, saw both&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/business\/5310394-musk-tesla-spacex-rankings-tumble\/\"><u>Tesla and SpaceX<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;drop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIn terms of political spending, I\u2019m going to do a lot less in the future,\u201d Musk&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/now\/video\/trump-threatens-tariffs-on-the-e-u-and-apple-240204357851\"><u>said at\u2002the Qatar Economic Forum<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;last week. \u201cI think I\u2019ve done enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Asked if that decision was because of blowback, Musk responded, \u201cIf I see a reason to do political spending in the future, I will do it. I do not currently see a reason.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI think he\u2019s feeling a lot of pressure from his other stakeholders, investors at Tesla specifically, to refocus on the car business. And he\u2019s telling them exactly what they want to hear,\u201d Conant said of Musk\u2019s remarks. \u201cBut there\u2019s no reason he couldn\u2019t change his mind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Republican strategist Brian Seitchik argued Musk \u201chas the luxury of changing his mind at a moment\u2019s notice\u201d when it comes to political spending.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWhile I absolutely believe that his position today, that may not be his position tomorrow, and he has the luxury of being angry, irritated or inspired in the coming months and decide to spend,\u201d Seitchik said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">If Musk is serious about curtailing his political dollars, fundraisers are sure to fret over losing the megadonor\u2019s potential support in the midterms, when the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/5236906-democrats-target-house-republicans-2026-midterms\/\"><u>GOP will have to\u2002fight<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;to hold on to its slim majorities in Congress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But not having Musk \u201cwould simply mean that Republicans have less money,\u201d Seitchik argued. \u201cIt\u2019s not as though they have no money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Republican strategist Ron Bonjean argued that if Musk moves aside, Trump can fill the void.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cTrump can now raise that type of fundraising very quickly. I think his efforts will offset Musk, and probably it will eclipse it by quite a bit,\u201d Bonjean said \u2014 though he, too, suggested Musk \u201ccould quickly pivot\u201d and get back on the fundraising playing field in the years ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">And Musk\u2019s political influence lost&nbsp;a key test&nbsp;in Wisconsin\u2019s state Supreme Court race in early April. He poured in millions to support the conservative candidate and even&nbsp;visited the Badger State, where he handed out $1 million checks to two town hall attendees just before voters headed to the polls.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Despite Musk\u2019s efforts, the&nbsp;liberal contender prevailed, prompting Democrats to pile on and the tech mogul to&nbsp;downplay the results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cBecause of the amount of money he put in, the way he put it in, how engaged he got in the race, the race almost became a little bit about him, as opposed to [the candidate],\u201d said Brandon Scholz, a longtime Wisconsin Republican strategist. \u201cMusk became so toxic that the Democrats were just doing cartwheels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Many Republicans have&nbsp;dismissed concerns&nbsp;about Musk as a political liability. But Scholz floated that it may be good for the party if Musk, mired in controversy around DOGE and the Trump administration, takes a pause on high-profile political involvement to figure out what that should look like moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIf they get rid of the sideshow [seen in Wisconsin], if they retool the message and manage his entrance back into races, he could, in time, deep-six the toxic moniker. He could, in time, take more of a back seat in terms of media presence,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Democrats, on the other hand, have been&nbsp;banking on Musk&nbsp;being a drag on Republican candidates heading into the midterms, as GOP candidates&nbsp;take heat from their voters&nbsp;over DOGE and Musk\u2019s White House role.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Democratic strategist Antjuan Seawright argued that, even if Musk does pump the brakes on his political activity, \u201cthe damage has already been done\u201d and Democrats can still seize on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIt will be malpractice if we do not make him a political ongoing liability in the days, weeks, months and elections to come, because the damage and the residue of his time will not go away just because he\u2019s not in the role,\u201d Seawright said. \u201cAnd just because he may not be out front maneuvering does not mean he\u2019s not maneuvering in such a way that may not reach the political eye.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">When it comes to Musk\u2019s government role, figures on both sides of the aisle forecast that he\u2019ll be a continued figure in Washington, even as he broadcasts his&nbsp;business focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Rep.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/greg-casar\/\"><u>Greg Casar\u2002<\/u><\/a>(D-Texas)&nbsp;pointed out&nbsp;that Musk was on Capitol Hill recently to meet with Republicans on energy and artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cElon Musk isn\u2019t gone, and we can\u2019t let Republicans pretend he is just because he\u2019s unpopular now. We have to keep up the pressure until we actually Fire Elon Musk,\u201d Casar&nbsp;said on social platform X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cAnyone actually believe he\u2019s stepping back?\u201d asked Rep.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/mark-pocan\/\"><u>Mark Pocan\u2002<\/u><\/a>(D-Wis.), contending that Musk is \u201cjust hiding in the closet, but he\u2019s still in the room.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cHe\u2019s certainly not going away,\u201d Seitchik said. \u201cWhile his day-to-day influence may change, he will continue to have a voice in this administration.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI think he\u2019ll always continue to wear a variety of hats,\u201d Bonjean said. \u201cI just don\u2019t think you\u2019ll see him living in the Lincoln Bedroom every day, but he\u2019s established a foothold here in Washington, and he\u2019ll be around more often than we probably think.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/5316761-musk-winds-down-political-spending-efforts\/\">thehill<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tech billionaire&nbsp;Elon Musk\u2002is prompting questions about his next steps as he signals he might wind down his political activity.
