House Intelligence Committee Chair Rick Crawford\u2002<\/u><\/a>(R-Ark.) said Sunday that the United States must do more in the Western Hemisphere to keep China\u2019s growing influence<\/u><\/a> at bay across Latin America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe sort of repositioned a lot of assets to address the global war on terror in two theaters, Iraq and Afghanistan \u2014 broadly the Middle East, and we sort of neglected our own neighborhood,\u201d Crawford told<\/u><\/a> NewsNation\u2019s Chris Stirewalt in an interview on \u201cThe Hill Sunday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crawford described it as his most pressing international concern facing the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the Chinese malign influence that\u2019s taking place throughout the hemisphere,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s them carving out a niche politically, economically, and I hope not militarily \u2014 but we\u2019re also seeing sort of an interest there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crawford, an Army veteran picked to lead<\/u><\/a> the influential House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence in January<\/u><\/a>, said he has seen how China built relationships in the region as the U.S. focused elsewhere. He noted the U.S. adversary has established and improved relationships through trade deals, infrastructure backing, and other moves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe haven\u2019t really done much in the way to engender any kind of a real kind of relationship that is concrete,\u201d he said, specifically citing Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras and Panama. \u201cWe\u2019re not doing that, and we should be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crawford said he believes those countries would prefer to work with the U.S. over China, but the U.S. hasn\u2019t done enough to forge partnerships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve met with heads of state in most every country in the hemisphere, and they\u2019ll all tell me, \u2018You\u2019re our preferred partner,\u2019 and then they\u2019ll turn around and get an agreement with China,\u201d Crawford told Stirewalt. \u201cWhat are we doing to give them some options, to give them alternatives? And the fact is, we haven\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
