{"id":42443,"date":"2025-05-18T21:55:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-19T02:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=42443"},"modified":"2025-05-18T22:47:31","modified_gmt":"2025-05-19T03:47:31","slug":"republicans-advance-trumps-big-beautiful-bill-in-unusual-late-night-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=42443","title":{"rendered":"Republicans advance Trump\u2019s \u2018big, beautiful bill\u2019 in unusual late-night vote"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Republican deficit hawks allowed President Trump\u2019s bill of legislative priorities to advance out of the House Budget Committee in an unusual late-night vote on Sunday, marking a key hurdle cleared for House GOP leaders and a sign of progress for warring Republican factions&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">After gaveling in after 10 p.m. on Sunday, the committee voted 17-16 to advance the \u201cOne Big Beautiful Bill Act,\u201d which would extend Trump\u2019s tax cuts and boost his border funding priorities while reforming Medicaid and food assistance programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The four Republican holdouts who had&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/5304115-gop-budget-committee-trump-bill-vote\/\"><u>tanked the vote on Friday<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 Reps.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/ralph-norman\/\"><u>Ralph Norman\u2002<\/u><\/a>(S.C.),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/chip-roy\/\"><u>Chip Roy\u2002<\/u><\/a>(Texas), Andrew Clyde (Ga.), and Josh Brecheen (Okla.) \u2014 voted present to allow the bill to go forward, with Roy revealing that there was progress on moving up the start date for new Medicaid work requirements and speeding up the phase-out of green energy incentives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In a sign of the high-stakes nature of the vote, the Speaker as well as White House Legislative Affairs Director James Braid made appearances off a room to the side of the late night Budget Committee affair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Speaker&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/mike-johnson\/\"><u>Mike Johnson\u2002<\/u><\/a>(R-La.) said they are counting the vote \u201cas a big win tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThere\u2019s a lot more work to do, we\u2019ve always acknowledged that towards the end there will be more details to iron out, we have several more to take care of,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cBut I\u2019m looking forward to very thoughtful discussions, very productive discussions over the next few days, and I am absolutely convinced we\u2019re going to get this in final form and pass it in accordance with our original deadline, and that was to do it before Memorial Day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cSo this will be a victory out of committee tonight, everybody will make a vote that allows us to proceed and that was my big request tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The next stop is the House Rules Committee, which is set to take up the legislation later this week and make last-minute changes to the bill to reflect any compromises and demands between deficit hawks and moderates in high-tax states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Despite the victory for leadership, the conservatives indicated they still have more work to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Roy said that while he voted present \u201cout of respect for the Republican Conference and the President,\u201d the bill \u201cdoes not yet meet the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">He said the revamped measure would \u201cmove Medicaid work requirements forward and reduces the availability of future subsidies under the green new scam.\u201d But,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/chiproytx\/status\/1924296387040080036?s\"><u>in a statement on X<\/u><\/a>, he objected to provisions around green energy tax credits and Medicaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThis all ultimately increases the likelihood of continuing deficits and non-Obamacare-expansion states like Texas expanding in the future.&nbsp; We can and must do better before we pass the final product,\u201d he wrote, alluding to wanting even more controversial Medicaid reforms like reining in the provider tax mechanism that allows states to extract more federal Medicaid matching dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Norman also indicated he was looking for changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe had some great changes, got a lot more work to do. We\u2019re excited about what we did, we wanted to move the bill forward and it went like I thought,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">We\u2019ve been downgraded three times, we have problems with the money in this country, the debt, the FMAPs gotta be dealt with,\u201d he said, referencing the share of Medicaid paid for by the federal government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Roy, who also sits on the Rules panel, would not commit to voting to advance the bill in that upcoming vote. He would not answer questions about whether Trump \u2014 who on Friday had pressed Republican \u201cGRANDSTANDERS\u201d to \u201cSTOP TALKING, AND GET IT DONE!\u201d \u2014 had talked to him about the bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The vote comes after four hardline conservatives on the committee tanked a vote on the legislation&nbsp;Friday, saying the cost-cutting measures in the bill did not go far enough.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Those fiscal hawks had said new Medicaid work requirements on \u201cable-bodied\u201d single adults and repeal of green energy incentives do not kick in soon enough, causing them to worry that the savings that are back-loaded on the overall 10-year cost of the package will not actually be realized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">On the other end of the Republican conference, moderates in high-tax states are demanding an increase to the state and local tax (SALT) deduction cap, currently written as $30,000 \u2014 a figure that amounts to three times the current level, but that moderates says is not acceptable to win their votes for the sprawling package.
