{"id":42298,"date":"2025-05-14T17:44:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-14T22:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=42298"},"modified":"2025-05-14T22:26:45","modified_gmt":"2025-05-15T03:26:45","slug":"harvard-president-takes-25-percent-pay-cut-amid-funding-battle-with-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=42298","title":{"rendered":"Harvard president takes 25 percent pay cut amid funding battle with Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Harvard President Alan Garber has decided to take a 25 percent pay cut as the university faces multiple financial hits in its battle with the Trump administration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A spokesperson confirmed Wednesday that Garber will take the voluntary pay cut for the next financial year from July 2025 to June 2026. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">His financial package was not disclosed, but the reduction is largely a symbolic move compared with the $2.5 billion dollars in federal funding that has been paused by President Trump. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Trump administration has also cut off all new research funding from Harvard, with Education Secretary&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/linda-mcmahon\/\"><u>Linda McMahon\u2002<\/u><\/a>telling Garber, \u201cHarvard should no longer seek GRANTS from the federal government, since none will be provided.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Harvard has already made multiple moves to offset costs, such as announcing a pause on hiring in March and pausing merit-based raises for some nonunion faculty. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Harvard Crimson was the first to report on Garber\u2019s pay cut. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In 2020, he also voluntarily reduced his compensation by 25 percent due to the financial hit Harvard took from the pandemic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In response to the financial pressure from the Trump administration, Harvard has also expanded its lawsuit against the federal government over the original $2.2 billion in funding that was cut in April.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The university added the additional $450 million in funding cut on Tuesday to its legal battle, with the next hearing in the case set for July.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Harvard said the federal government \u201cratcheted up funding cuts, investigations, and threats that will hurt students from every state in the country and around the world\u201d in its amended complaint. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/education\/5300892-harvard-univeristy-president-trump-funding-cuts\/\">thehill<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Harvard President Alan Garber has decided to take a 25 percent pay cut as the university faces multiple financial hits in its battle with the Trump administration.&nbsp;
