{"id":42281,"date":"2025-05-14T03:42:48","date_gmt":"2025-05-14T08:42:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=42281"},"modified":"2025-05-14T03:43:13","modified_gmt":"2025-05-14T08:43:13","slug":"louisiana-investigating-second-abortion-pill-case-against-new-york-doctor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=42281","title":{"rendered":"Louisiana investigating second abortion pill case against New York doctor"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Louisiana\u2019s attorney general is investigating a second case involving New York doctor Margaret Carpenter after she allegedly prescribed and mailed abortion medication to another woman in the state, this time&nbsp;located in the city of Shreveport. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Shreveport woman was 20 weeks pregnant when she took the abortion medication and subsequently went into labor, Attorney General Liz Murrill said during a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/house.louisiana.gov\/H_Video\/VideoArchivePlayer?v=house\/2025\/May\/0512_25_CL\"><u>testimony<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;for an anti-abortion bill in the state\u2019s House Civil Law and Procedure Committee on Monday. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cShe and her boyfriend, after she gave birth, took the baby, wrapped it in a towel, and threw it in a garbage can,\u201d she said. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The couple went to the hospital and were told to retrieve the baby, which the boyfriend did, Murrill said, adding that local law enforcement is also investigating the incident. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Medication abortions typically involve consuming a combination of the drugs mifepristone and misoprostol and are recommended up until 10 weeks of pregnancy. Afterwards, health care providers recommend that those wishing to terminate a pregnancy undergo a surgical abortion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Murrill did not say why she believes it was Carpenter who mailed the abortion medication to the woman in Shreveport. Murrill\u2019s office did not immediately respond to questions from The Hill nor did Carpenter. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A Louisiana grand jury indicted Carpenter in January for violating a state law after she allegedly prescribed abortion medication to a woman in the state who then gave it to her teenage daughter. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">State law enforcement issued an arrest warrant for Carpenter, and she was charged with criminal abortion by means of abortion inducing drugs. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry issued an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/healthcare\/5143407-louisiana-extradite-new-york-doctor\/\"><u>extradition request<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;for Carpenter, who co-founded the Abortion Coalition for Telemedicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/newsletters\/health-care\/5202068-texas-ag-arrests-alleged-illegal-abortions\/\"><u>also sued<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;Carpenter last year for allegedly prescribing and mailing abortion pills to a woman in the state. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">New York Governor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/kathy-hochul\/\"><u>Kathy Hochul\u2002<\/u><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/healthcare\/5145164-kathy-hochul-louisiana-new-york-abortion-pill-extradition\/\"><u>rejected Landry\u2019s extradition request<\/u><\/a>, vowing to protect the doctor and never sign an extradition request from the state. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">New York is one of about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other\/state-indicator\/shield-laws\/?currentTimeframe=0&amp;selectedDistributions=protections-against-out-of-state-investigations-and-prosecutions&amp;sortModel={:,:}\"><u>eight<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;blue states that after the 2022 overturning of Roe v. Wade have enacted&nbsp;an abortion \u201cshield law\u201d to protect abortion providers regardless of the location of their patients. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The newly introduced bill in Louisiana would make it easier for the state to punish abortion providers who send medication in the mail. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.la.gov\/legis\/BillInfo.aspx?i=248621\"><u>House Bill 575<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;would allow Louisianans to sue any person or entity that \u201ccauses or substantially facilitates an abortion.\u201d Under the bill, people can sue even if the attempted medication abortion does not end the pregnancy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIt is another mechanism, it is another tool in the toolbox for people who are harmed by somebody who is intent on violating our laws,\u201d said Murrill. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe\u2019re not going to stop trying to extradite her and prosecute her for the crimes that she\u2019s committing in our state,\u201d she added, referring to Carpenter. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Hochul doubled down Tuesday on her commitment to protect Carpenter against further cases from Louisiana. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cAnti-choice zealots can file as many cases as they want.
