{"id":42028,"date":"2025-05-08T18:39:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-08T23:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=42028"},"modified":"2025-05-08T23:11:53","modified_gmt":"2025-05-09T04:11:53","slug":"house-gop-out-of-sync-on-medicaid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=42028","title":{"rendered":"House GOP out of sync on Medicaid"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">One of the thorniest issues facing House Republicans has&nbsp;yet to be&nbsp;resolved, even as the Energy and Commerce Committee barrels toward a meeting early next week to mark up its portion of President Trump\u2019s domestic policy bill.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">As lawmakers left Washington Thursday for the weekend, there seemed to be no consensus on whether a contentious proposal to cap Medicaid spending for the expansion population will be included to help the committee find&nbsp;<strong>$880 billion<\/strong>&nbsp;to cut from programs under its jurisdiction. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Reaching that number without entertaining controversial Medicaid cuts would be&nbsp;<strong>incredibly difficult<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Committee chairman&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/brett-guthrie\/\"><u>Brett Guthrie\u2002<\/u><\/a>indicated Thursday there are still ongoing discussions about the inclusion of \u201cper capita caps,\u201d a nod to the unresolved&nbsp;<strong>tensions<\/strong>&nbsp;between moderates warning against&nbsp;Medicaid benefit cuts and conservatives who want to deeply slash the program\u2019s spending.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The markup, which is expected to start Tuesday afternoon, could go for many hours as Democrats try to make it as painful as possible for Republicans. The committee held a marathon&nbsp;<strong>27-hour markup<\/strong>&nbsp;to debate the GOP ObamaCare repeal legislation in 2017; this one could be even longer. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The markup, which is expected to start Tuesday afternoon, could go for many hours as Democrats try to make it as painful as possible for Republicans.
