President Donald Trump insisted Tuesday that he had prepared Americans for a tough \u201ctransition period,\u201d despite having run a campaign that made explicit Day One promises<\/a> to bring down prices and restore economic prosperity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview with ABC News\u2019 Terry Moran, Trump defended his trade policies, which have raised fears of skyrocketing prices and an unstable economy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Moran noted that Trump had told Americans to \u201chang tough\u201d<\/a> as the stock markets and the business community account for his tariffs on foreign countries, Trump suggested that any resulting hardships should come as no surprise to those who voted for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI said all these things during my campaign,\u201d Trump said in the recorded interview, which was timed to coincide with the 100th day of his second term in office and broadcast in prime time. \u201cI said, \u2018You\u2019re going to have a transition period.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump\u2019s sales pitch<\/a> hardly braced voters for the tough times he now says he prepared them to expect. While he did promise to implement tariffs, he often spoke of an instant recovery that would be triggered by his inauguration and his first executive actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August, for example, Trump staged a news conference complete with a backdrop of groceries at his New Jersey golf club, vowing to \u201cimmediately bring prices down, starting on Day One.\u201d And at a rally in Saginaw, Michigan, in October, he pledged: \u201cStarting on Day One of my new administration, we will end inflation, and we will make America affordable again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump made his \u201chang tough\u201d comments<\/a> on social media April 5, long after the campaign was over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moran also suggested to Trump that Americans \u201cdidn\u2019t sign up\u201d for a trade war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, they did sign up for it,\u201d Trump countered. \u201cThis is what I campaigned on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the interview, Trump rejected the idea that his policies would be a long-term hindrance. When Moran, continuing to press on the tariff issue, asked whether his message to voters was that everything \u201cis going to be hunky dory,\u201d Trump nonchalantly replied: \u201cEverything is going to be just fine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He quickly added: \u201cIt wouldn\u2019t have been if I didn\u2019t do this. I had a choice. I could leave it, have a nice, easy time, but I think ultimately it would have had an implosion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At another point, Trump took aim at the board that sets U.S. monetary policy, arguing that \u201cinterest rates should be down, but we have a Federal Reserve that wants to be stubborn.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the conversation turned to other topics, Trump defended Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth \u2014 who has come under scrutiny for communicating sensitive information over unsecure channels and for how he runs the Defense Department \u2014 as \u201csmart\u201d and \u201ctalented.\u201d (He told The Atlantic, in an interview published this week<\/a>, that Hegseth\u2019s job was safe.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Trump stopped short of a total vote of confidence. When Moran asked whether Trump had \u201ca hundred percent confidence\u201d in Hegseth, he balked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have a hundred percent confidence in anything, OK? Anything,\u201d Trump replied. \u201cDo I have a hundred percent? It\u2019s a stupid question.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pressed further, Trump added: \u201cYou don\u2019t have a hundred percent. Only a liar would say, \u2018I have a hundred percent confidence.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump also defended his administration\u2019s hard-line approach on deportations, at several points questioning whether people alleged to be undocumented immigrants were entitled to their due process of hearings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, I\u2019ll have to ask the lawyers about that,\u201d he replied when Moran asserted that the law requires anyone up for deportation to first have a hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll I can say is this,\u201d Trump added. \u201cIf you\u2019re going to have 21 million people \u2014 and we have to get a lot of them out because they\u2019re criminals \u2014 we\u2019re going to have to act fast. Do you think we can give 21 million trials? Let\u2019s say each trial takes two weeks. Is that what you want us to do?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump also said he does not believe the cost-cutting efforts by the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency have gone too far or been too reckless. And when he was asked at the interview\u2019s conclusion what he would say to people who think he is seizing too much power and becoming \u201can authoritarian,\u201d Trump rejected the notion and reverted to his campaign\u2019s slogan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, I would hate them to think that,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m doing one thing: I\u2019m making America great again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
