Greenland\u2019s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said on Sunday that the United States has \u201cnot been respectful\u201d in the way its officials have discussed their interest in taking over the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe talks from the United States have not been respectful,\u201d he said at a press conference near Copenhagen, alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe words used have not been respectful. That\u2019s why we need in this situation, we need to stand together,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nielsen made clear that Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, \u201cwill never, ever be a piece of property that can be bought by just anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The remarks come during Nielsen\u2019s three-day trip to Denmark, where leaders of both countries seek to strengthen cooperation as President Trump\u2002<\/u><\/a>makes his interest in acquiring the country clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cDenmark has the will to invest in the Greenlandic society, and we don\u2019t just have that for historical reasons. We also have that because we are part of (the Danish) commonwealth with each other,\u201d Frederiksen said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe of course have a will to also continue investing in the Greenlandic society,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Asked whether there are plans to meet with Trump, the Danish prime minister said, \u201cWe always want to meet with the American president.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOf course we want to,\u201d she continued. \u201cBut I think we have been very, very clear in what is the (Danish commonwealth\u2019s) approach to all parts of the Kingdom of Denmark.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
