President Trump\u2002<\/u><\/a>said Tuesday that the hefty tariff rate on China will significantly be reduced after he negotiates with Chinese President Xi Jinping,<\/u><\/a> expressing optimism about a trade deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c145 percent is very high. It won\u2019t be that high, it\u2019s not going to be that high \u2026 it won\u2019t be anywhere near that high,\u201d Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. \u201cIt will come down substantially, but it won\u2019t be zero.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The overall tariff level imposed on China is 145 percent, which remained in place after Trump delayed the \u201creciprocal\u201d tariffs on other trading partners for 90 days and reduced them to 10 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to be very nice. They\u2019re going to be very nice, and we\u2019ll see what happens. But ultimately, they have to make a deal because otherwise they\u2019re not going to be able to deal in the United States,\u201d Trump said, referring to China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He cited his relationship with Xi as his reason for being optimistic about a deal. The White House said earlier Tuesday<\/u><\/a> that it was \u201csetting the stage for a deal with China,\u201d seeking to reassure nervous financial markets<\/u><\/a> and investors that progress with Beijing could be imminent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cChina was taking us for a ride, and it\u2019s not going to happen. We\u2019re going to be very good to China, have a great relationship with President Xi. But, they would make billions and billions and billions of dollars a year, and they would build their military out of the United States and what they made. So, that won\u2019t happen,\u201d Trump said. \u201cBut they\u2019re going to do very well, and I think they\u2019re going to be happy, and I think we\u2019re going to live together very happily and ideally work together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent\u2002<\/u><\/a>told a private meeting of investors in Washington on Tuesday that he expects a \u201cde-escalation\u201d in the trade war between the U.S. and China, according to\u2002multiple reports<\/u><\/a>. China has levied\u2002retaliatory tariffs<\/u><\/a> on American goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president also said Tuesday that his team will \u201cset the deal\u201d when the 90-day pause has ended if trading partners are not able to reach one. And, he said he has been in talks with \u201cmany, many\u201d world leaders in the weeks since he paused the reciprocal tariffs, predicting the negotiation process will \u201cgo pretty quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The administration has received 18 proposals from other countries as part of ongoing trade negotiations, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt\u2002<\/u><\/a>told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
