Kathy Hochul said, \u201cThe program is working. Traffic is down, business is up and the cameras are staying on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The U.S. Transportation Department said in a statement to NBC New York on Friday that it expected New York to comply with the Sunday deadline to \u201cterminate this program.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cUSDOT will continue to fight for working class Americans whose tax dollars have already funded and paid for these roads,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials told NBC New York it was unlikely anything would change Sunday, given that a federal judge has so far sided with New York that the toll is legal, and court filings suggest it will most likely take until the fall for the case to be fully resolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In addition, both Hochul and the MTA have said that unless a court directs otherwise, the cameras, and therefore the tolls, will stay on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The plan has already faced a number of deadlines from the federal government, followed by just as many pushbacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Congestion pricing, which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/new-york-congestion-charge-hochul-rcna186273\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">went into effect on Jan. 5<\/a>, has goals to lessen traffic in the overcrowded city and pump money into the ailing subway system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The plan charges most cars entering Manhattan&#8217;s central business district \u2014&nbsp;which stretches from 60th Street down to the southern tip of the Financial District \u2014&nbsp;a peak fee of $9 from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Trump administration&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/trump-administration-terminates-approval-new-york-city-congestion-pric-rcna192847\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sought to kill the program on Feb. 19<\/a>, with President Donald Trump declaring himself \u201cking\u201d in a social media post that celebrated the potential end of congestion pricing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in a letter to Hochul that the federal government has jurisdiction over highways leading to Manhattan, making the newly imposed toll an unfair burden for drivers outside New York City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Hochul fought back,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovKathyHochul\/status\/1892332151439327430?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1892332151439327430%7Ctwgr%5E87b62b24851caf80ba002143896aad0bde093d56%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fiframe.nbcnews.com%2F0QFQ6sQ%3F_showcaption%3Dtrueapp%3D1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declaring<\/a>: &#8220;The cameras are staying on.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The next week, the Trump administration<a href=\"https:\/\/ops.fhwa.dot.gov\/memorandum\/Cordon_Outgoing_letter.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;gave New York until March 21 to end<\/a>&nbsp;congestion pricing. On March 20, Duffy pushed the deadline back 30 more days, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nyc-congestion-pricing-toll-trump-hochul-826ddc20735c6115a2e5b634765ea4c0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/USDOTRapid\/status\/1909658347483054097\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Transportation Department said April 8<\/a>&nbsp;that it was not backing down on Sunday&#8217;s deadline.
