{"id":40997,"date":"2025-04-14T20:41:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-15T01:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=40997"},"modified":"2025-04-14T22:37:07","modified_gmt":"2025-04-15T03:37:07","slug":"us-government-slapping-21-percent-tariff-on-most-tomatoes-from-mexico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=40997","title":{"rendered":"US government slapping 21 percent tariff on most tomatoes from Mexico"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The United States government announced that it plans to slap a nearly 21 percent tariff on most tomatoes coming from Mexico in the summer, arguing the current agreement has not \u201cprotected\u201d U.S.-based tomato growers from \u201cunfairly priced Mexican imports.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Commerce Department said on Monday that it plans to withdraw from the 2019 trade agreement with Mexico and that an \u201cantidumping duty order\u201d will be instituted on July 14.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThis action will allow U.S. tomato growers to compete fairly in the marketplace,\u201d the Commerce Department&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.trade.gov\/press-release\/us-department-commerce-announces-intent-withdraw-2019-suspension-agreement-fresh\"><u>said<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in a release on Monday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">During&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/donald-trump\/\"><u>President Trump\u2019s\u2002<\/u><\/a>first White House term, the U.S. government&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/finance\/trade\/458255-trump-administration-announces-deal-to-avert-tariffs-on-mexican-tomatoes\/\"><u>struck<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;an agreement with tomato producers from Mexico to prevent a possible 25 percent tariff on the commodity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The 2019 deal included enforcement provisions, including an inspection mechanism to bar low-quality tomatoes from being imported and establishing prices for various types of the commodity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In early 2019, during President Trump\u2019s first term in the White House, the U.S. government threatened to withdraw from the existing agreement and levy duties against Mexico after complaints from growers in Florida who argued that Mexico City is performing price suppression of the crop and, therefore taking advantage of Washington.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Mexico, a major trading partner, is the U.S.\u2019s largest importer of tomatoes, along with vegetables and fruits.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Mexico and the U.S. have been tangled in other disputes.
