{"id":4091,"date":"2023-01-13T03:21:05","date_gmt":"2023-01-13T09:21:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=4091"},"modified":"2023-03-24T01:57:03","modified_gmt":"2023-03-24T06:57:03","slug":"us-deficit-widens-by-85-billion-in-december","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=4091","title":{"rendered":"US deficit widens by $85 billion in December"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The US government recorded a deficit of $85 billion in December, bringing the total deficit to nearly $1.42 trillion for the 2022 calendar year, the Treasury Department reported Thursday.<br \/>\nThe government, which runs on a fiscal year that starts in October, is running a deficit of $421.41 billion for its fiscal first quarter of 2023, a 12% increase from the fiscal first quarter of 2022, Treasury data shows.<br \/>\nDecember\u2019s deficit was nearly four times as large as the $21.3 billion deficit recorded in December 2021 as spending grew and revenue fell last month. Receipts totaled $454.94 billion, while outlays were $539.94 billion in December 2022.<br \/>\nBudget watchdog the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget said the $1.4 trillion calendar year total is \u201cstaggering, considering the worst of the pandemic and the accompanying recession have been over for a long while now.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWe should not be borrowing $4 billion a day, an apparent debt addiction that is harmful to the economy and the budget,\u201d Maya MacGuineas, president of the CRFB, said in a statement.<br \/>\nThe House Republicans\u2019 rules package\u00a0adopted earlier this week\u00a0included measures aimed at reining in federal government spending and keeping a lid on taxes.<br \/>\nThe measures, several of which raised concerns even among cost-conscious Republican lawmakers, are sure to lead to battles later this year with the Democratic-led Senate and President Joe Biden that could have severe consequences.<br \/>\nIf the two parties can\u2019t work out an agreement to fund the government for fiscal year 2024, which starts October 1, it could result in a shutdown.
