{"id":40682,"date":"2025-04-07T01:37:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-07T06:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=40682"},"modified":"2025-04-07T03:17:41","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T08:17:41","slug":"swollen-rivers-flood-towns-in-us-south-after-dayslong-deluge-of-rain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=40682","title":{"rendered":"Swollen rivers flood towns in US South after dayslong deluge of rain"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">FRANKFORT, Kentucky (AP) \u2014 Days of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/severe-weather-flooding-tornado-5031aa5a5ebeec0e50c1b753acd81bf0\"><u>unrelenting heavy rain<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;and storms that killed at least 18 people&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/100-year-flood-frequency-probability-weather-climate-1441437964b77de38e4e590c3c0698e0\"><u>worsened flooding<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;as some rivers rose to near-record levels and inundated towns across an already saturated U.S. South and parts of the Midwest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Cities ordered evacuations and rescue crews in inflatable boats checked on residents in Kentucky and Tennessee, while utilities shut off power and gas in a region stretching from Texas to Ohio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs long as I\u2019ve been alive \u2014 and I\u2019m 52 \u2014 this is the worst I\u2019ve ever seen it,\u201d said Wendy Quire, the general manager at the Brown Barrel restaurant in downtown Frankfort, Kentucky, the state capital built around the swollen Kentucky River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe rain just won\u2019t stop,\u201d Quire said Sunday. \u201cIt\u2019s been nonstop for days and days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Officials diverted traffic and turned off utilities to businesses in the city as the river was expected to crest above 49 feet Monday to a record-setting level, said Frankfort Mayor Layne Wilkerson. The city\u2019s flood wall system is designed to withstand 51 feet of water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">For many, there was a sense of dread that the worst was still to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis flooding is an act of God,\u201d said Kevin Gordon, a front desk clerk at the Ashbrook Hotel in downtown Frankfort. The hotel was offering discounted stays to affected locals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Storms leaving devastating impact<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The 18 reported deaths since the storms began on Wednesday included 10 in Tennessee. A 9-year-old boy in Kentucky was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/kentucky-flooding-boy-dead-cde1e82c31b127b08154422d68d6a4ea\"><u>caught up in floodwaters<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;while walking to catch his school bus. A 5-year-old boy in Arkansas died after a tree fell on his family\u2019s home, police said. A 16-year-old volunteer Missouri firefighter died in a crash while seeking to rescue people caught in the storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The National Weather Service warned Sunday that dozens of locations in multiple states were expected to reach a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/lot\/hydrology_definitions\"><u>\u201cmajor flood stage,\u201d<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;with extensive flooding of structures, roads, bridges and other critical infrastructure possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In north-central Kentucky, emergency officials ordered a mandatory evacuation for Falmouth and Butler, towns near the bend of the rising Licking River. Thirty years ago, the river reached a record 50 feet (15 meters), resulting in five deaths and 1,000 homes destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The storms come after the Trump administration&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/noaa-job-cuts-weather-forecasts-trump-doge-musk-7e35e9d5d757d8fc3f0f50b2bd71c87d\"><u>cut jobs<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;at NWS forecast offices, leaving half of them with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/doge-weather-cuts-tornado-dangerous-staff-warnings-aa7db3e0d0009d99c143742ab722c40a\"><u>vacancy rates<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of about 20%, or double the level of a decade ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why so much nasty weather?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Forecasters attributed the violent weather to warm temperatures, an unstable atmosphere, strong winds and abundant moisture streaming from the Gulf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The NWS said 5.06 inches (nearly 13 centimeters) of rain fell Saturday in Jonesboro, Arkansas \u2014 making it the wettest day ever recorded in April in the city. Memphis, Tennessee, received 14 inches (35 centimeters) of rain from Wednesday to Sunday, the NWS said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Rives, a northwestern Tennessee town of about 200 people, was almost entirely underwater after the Obion River overflowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Domanic Scott went to check on his father in Rives after not hearing from him in a house where water reached the doorstep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s the first house we\u2019ve ever paid off. The insurance companies around here won\u2019t give flood insurance to anyone who lives in Rives because we\u2019re too close to the river and the levees. So if we lose it, we\u2019re kind of screwed without a house,\u201d Scott said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In Dyersburg, Tennessee, dozens of people arrived over the weekend at a storm shelter near a public school clutching blankets, pillows and other necessities. Just days earlier the city was hit by a tornado that caused millions of dollars in damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Among them was George Manns, 77, who said he was in his apartment when he heard a tornado warning and decided to head to the shelter.
