{"id":40655,"date":"2025-04-06T03:44:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-06T08:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=40655"},"modified":"2025-04-06T05:26:07","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T10:26:07","slug":"umass-amherst-says-5-international-students-have-had-visas-revoked","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=40655","title":{"rendered":"UMass Amherst says 5 international students have had visas revoked"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The University of Massachusetts Amherst confirmed Saturday that five international students at the school have had their visas revoked by federal authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Javier Reyes, chancellor of the university, called the incidents \u201ctroubling news\u201d in a letter that was published online Friday evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIn each of the five cases, the students\u2019 legal status to remain in the United States has been revoked,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.umass.edu\/news\/article\/immigration-actions-affecting-students-umass-sponsored-visas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reyes wrote<\/a>. \u201cThe university was not notified by federal authorities of these status revocations and only became aware as a result of proactive checks in the Immigration and Customs Enforcement\u2019s Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) database.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">He added that the school is working with the Massachusetts attorney general, and he advised international students on school-sponsored visas to reach out to UMass\u2019 Office of Global Affairs if they \u201creceive any communications (phone calls or emails) purporting to be from the federal government.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A spokesperson for the university said officials there have \u201cno reason to believe that these revocations are connected to campus activism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">They do, however, come in the wake of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/scholars-targeted-deportation-trump-administration-rcna197331\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">other instances of foreign-born students and scholars<\/a>&nbsp;at the University of Cincinnati, Columbia University, the University of Alabama and elsewhere who&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/trump-administration-takes-aim-immigrant-students-rcna198346\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seem to have been targeted as a result of their activism<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The University of California&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.universityofcalifornia.edu\/press-room\/university-california-statement-international-students-visa-status-terminations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">confirmed Friday<\/a>&nbsp;that \u201cinternational students across several of our campuses\u201d were similarly affected by visa revocations, though it did not specify how many people were impacted and at which schools in its 10-campus system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Separately, Fordham University said an undergraduate student had their visa revoked, too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cFor many of the brilliant members of the Fordham community joining us from countries around the world, this is a source of growing distress and anxiety. I wish it were within my power to offer you reassurance,\u201d Fordham President Tania Tetlow said Friday night in an email to the campus community.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Tetlow did not provide further details on the identity of the student in question, but said the school has put together a working group to \u201cnavigate these issues, plan our response, and provide support.\u201d The group will share more guidance soon, she said, adding that students who have something happen to their immigration status should call Fordham Public Safety, available 24\/7.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment Saturday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The recent crackdowns are a signal of the Trump administration&#8217;s efforts to target people who have obtained legal status to study and live in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Reyes joined other college leaders in saying these actions could stop international students from wanting to study in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cAttracting students from every corner of the globe, higher education in the United States has always been the envy of the world,\u201d Reyes wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">He said the school has emergency grants to help provide assistance to students who are facing immigration obstacles by the federal government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI want to stress how important our international community is to the vitality of our campus,\u201d he wrote, \u201cand assure every international student and scholar at UMass of our unwavering support as we confront this new reality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/immigration\/umass-amherst-says-international-students-visas-revoked-rcna199875\">nbcnews<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Massachusetts Amherst confirmed Saturday that five international students at the school have had their visas revoked by federal authorities.
