That\u2019s less than the 226,000 new applications analysts forecast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Weekly applications for jobless benefits are considered a proxy for layoffs, and have remained mostly in a range between 200,000 and 250,000 for the past few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">However, following the Trump administration\u2019s announcement of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariffs-liberation-day-2a031b3c16120a5672a6ddd01da09933\">widespread tariff hikes<\/a>&nbsp;yesterday, economists are worried about a global economic slowdown that could upend what has been an incredibly resilient labor market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Like his pledge to institute tariffs, Trump\u2019s promise to drastically downsize the federal government workforce is fully in motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not clear when the job cuts ordered by the Department of Government Efficiency, or \u201cDOGE,\u201d will surface in the weekly layoffs data, but some economists have suggested they could show up in the Labor Department\u2019s March jobs report, which comes out Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The February jobs report showed that the federal government shed 10,000 jobs, the most since June of 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">On Monday, some workers at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/us-food-and-drug-administration\">Food and Drug Administration<\/a>&nbsp;were told to pack their laptops and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/health-human-services-layoffs-restructuring-rfk-jr-ec4d7731695e4204970c7eab953b2289\">prepare for the possibility<\/a>&nbsp;that they wouldn\u2019t be back, according to an email obtained by The Associated Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The mass dismissals are expected to result in 20,000 fewer jobs \u2014 nearly a quarter of its staff \u2014 at the Department of Health and Human Services. About 10,000 jobs will be eliminated through layoffs, while another 10,000 workers took early retirement and voluntary separation offers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Other federal agencies that have either announced layoffs or are planning cuts include the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/irs-doge-layoffs-tax-season-0659e4b439400bf66023273f6a532fa0#:~:text=The%20IRS%20is%20drafting%20plans,person%20workforce%2C%20AP%20sources%20say&amp;text=WASHINGTON%20(AP)%20%E2%80%94%20The%20IRS,people%20familiar%20with%20the%20situation.\">IRS<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/us-small-business-administration\">Small Business Administration<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/veterans-affairs-cuts-doge-musk-trump-f587a6bc3db6a460e9c357592e165712\">Veterans Affairs<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/education-department-layoffs-job-cuts-linda-mcmahon-ce9f6a8a63972aede0d8fbdf057ab788\">Department of Education<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The layoffs are part of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/donald-trump\">Trump administration\u2019s efforts<\/a>&nbsp;to shrink the size of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/federal-workforce-employees-trump-cuts-buyouts-86d7a1bc5b3968aa92e0657a7e15bee1\">federal workforce<\/a>&nbsp;through \u201cDOGE,\u201d spearheaded by billionaire&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/gsa-federal-buildings-doge-fbi-doj-aa123e9c3b12e38c8fa511c2a727f880\">Elon Musk<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Despite showing some signs of weakening during the past year, the labor market remains healthy with plentiful jobs and relatively few layoffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The government reported that U.S.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jobs-economy-inflation-federal-reserve-trump-tariffs-b4d858e84afc2ae97f9c011e8243941a#:~:text=fell%20to%204%25-,US%20employers%20added%20143%2C000%20jobs%20in%20unspectacular%20January,jobless%20rate%20fell%20to%204%25&amp;text=WASHINGTON%20(AP)%20%E2%80%94%20U.S.%20employers,to%204%25%20to%20start%202025.\">employers added a solid 151,000 jobs<\/a>&nbsp;in February, and while the unemployment rate inched up to 4.1%, it remains a healthy figure by historical standards. Analysts surveyed by data firm FactSet forecast that nonfarm payrolls in March will show an increase of 130,000 and that the unemployment rate will tick up to 4.2%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Some high-profile companies have announced job cuts already this year, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/workday-layoffs-job-cuts-ai-investments-437581ad79d6e1cef2de7b300015dfbb\">Workday<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/dow-chemicals-plastics-earnings-layoffs-aaac9c6894da83009aa5aa0eb94926de\">Dow<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cnn-layoffs-digital-journalism-news-6be39d07df264c93c6c7c409ee76f6a3\">CNN<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/starbucks-layoffs-corporate-ac4110200335139836c6b370d864313c\">Starbucks<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/southwest-airlines-layoffs-29a0daf8f8091ae2b0a9c11282138464\">Southwest Airlines<\/a>&nbsp;and Facebook parent company Meta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The four-week average of applications, which aims to smooth out some of the week-to-week swings, fell by 1,250 to 223,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The total number of Americans receiving unemployment benefits for the week of March 22 increased by 56,000 to 1.9 million.
