It\u2019s like, we need to get attention. And it\u2019s somewhat inevitably, when I do this, these things\u2026 it causes the legacy media to, like, kind of lose their minds, and then they\u2019ll run it on every news channel,\u201d Musk said on stage at the town hall, before giving out the large checks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cAnd I\u2019m like, I couldn\u2019t pay them to, it would cost, like, 10 times more\u2026 to get the kind of coverage that we get\u201d without distributing the checks, Musk said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">He added, later: \u201cThis is just helpful for getting attention, and then, like, it\u2019s kind of fun to see the legacy media lose their minds over it too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Musk appeared to make good on his promise on Sunday to give checks to two members of the audience, all of whom were required to sign his petition against so-called \u201cactivist judges\u201d in order to get a seat at the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The town hall was held in advance of Tuesday\u2019s critical Wisconsin Supreme Court race, into which Musk and his America PAC have poured millions of dollars to support the conservative candidate, Judge Brad Schimel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The promise of giving out $2 million caused significant controversy leading up to the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Earlier that day, Wisconsin Attorney General&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/josh-kaul\/\"><u>Josh Kaul\u2002<\/u><\/a>(D) asked the state\u2019s top court to block Musk from giving away the checks at his town hall, arguing they were \u201cillegal payments\u201d to buy votes.
