Michelle Lujan Grisham, who supports the proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The bill responds to a troubling number of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/missing-murdered-indigenous-people-kaysera-a9155ee50f769976c716a729ceb29e65\">disappearances and killings in Indian Country<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 and would allow law enforcement to quickly share information about Native Americans who go missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201cturquoise alert\u201d system \u2014 taking its name from the blue-green mineral \u2014 would function much like existing \u201camber\u201d and \u201csilver\u201d alerts that highlight the disappearance of children and the elderly. Cellphone alerts would be issued when law enforcement finds evidence of imminent danger in the disappearance of a Native American.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI carry with me countless stories of how our system has failed to respond to the disappearance or murder of Native people in our state,\u201d said Democratic state Sen. Angel Charley of Acoma Pueblo, a co-sponsor of the bill. \u201cWe have answered the call.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">California, Washington and Colorado have similar alert systems, according to the New Mexico Department of Indian Affairs. Arizona lawmakers are considering their own alert system as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/san-carlos-apache-teen-mmip-8daaafb54cbd8a2ac635ec796baa0b16\">the brutal death of San Carlos Apache teenager Emily Pike reverberates<\/a>&nbsp;through Native American communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">New Mexico has 23 federally recognized tribes, including large portions of the Navajo Nation, as well as land holdings of the Fort Sill Apache.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The safety and concerns of those communities were on prominent display during a 60-day legislative session that ends Saturday at noon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">A bill signed Wednesday by Lujan Grisham ensures students can wear their own Native American regalia at graduation and other school ceremonies in the spirit of free expression linked to cultural heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/wireStory\/new-mexico-bill-provide-turquoise-safety-alert-native-120008640\">abcnews<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SANTA FE, N.M. &#8212;&nbsp;A bill that would create a \u201cturquoise\u201d safety alert system for missing Native American people in New Mexico has been endorsed by the Legislature.
