President Trump\u2002<\/u><\/a>proposed a takeover of Ukrainian power plants as a form of protection, suggesting the U.S. could deter Russian attacks, amid a push for a partial ceasefire<\/u><\/a> between Kyiv and Moscow covering energy facilities and infrastructure<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump made the offer during a call<\/u><\/a> with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky\u2002<\/u><\/a>on Tuesday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAmerican ownership of those plants would be the best protection for that infrastructure and support for Ukrainian energy infrastructure,\u201d national security adviser Mike Waltz\u2002<\/u><\/a>and Secretary of State Marco Rubio\u2002<\/u><\/a>said in a joint statement following the call. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe said that the United States could be very helpful in running those plants with its electricity and utility expertise,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump\u2019s push for control of Ukraine\u2019s nuclear power plants is reportedly linked to his support for a minerals deal<\/u><\/a> with Ukraine as repayment for American military assistance. The president shelved the deal with Ukraine following an explosive Oval Office meeting<\/u><\/a> late last month. And while Zelensky\u2019s overtures have helped repair<\/u><\/a> U.S. relations that ruptured in the fallout<\/u><\/a>, the minerals deal<\/u><\/a> is currently stalled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New York Times reported Tuesday<\/u><\/a> that Trump views control of Ukraine\u2019s nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia<\/u><\/a> as important in building out extraction of the war-torn nation\u2019s critical minerals. The power plant is occupied by Russian forces and is on the front line of fighting in the southeastern region of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zelensky did not address talks regarding the minerals deal or U.S. control of nuclear power plants in a statement following the call. But he put support behind Trump\u2019s push for a partial ceasefire<\/u><\/a> and agreed for continued close cooperation with the White House. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe agreed that Ukraine and the United States should continue working together to achieve a real end to the war and lasting peace,\u201d Zelensky said. \u201cWe believe that together with America, with President Trump, and under American leadership, lasting peace can be achieved this year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conversation came a day after Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2002<\/u><\/a>spoke for nearly three hours<\/u><\/a> about a partial truce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
