National security adviser Mike Waltz\u2002<\/u><\/a>confirmed on Sunday that U.S. airstrikes \u201ctook out\u201d multiple Houthi leaders in attacks this weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked how the U.S. attacks this weekend differ from strikes under the Biden\u2002<\/u><\/a>administration, Waltz said those \u201cback-and-forth\u201d strikes \u201cultimately proved to be feckless attacks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis was an overwhelming response that actually targeted multiple Houthi leaders and took them out,\u201d Waltz said in an interview on ABC News\u2019s \u201cThis Week.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd the difference here is, one, going after the Houthi leadership and, two, holding Iran responsible,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Waltz stressed the negative consequences that the Houthis have had on global commerce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is Iran that has repeatedly funded, resourced, trained and helped the Houthis target not only U.S. warships, but global commerce, and has helped the Houthis shut down two of the world\u2019s most strategic sea lanes,\u201d Waltz said, noting nearly three-quarters of global shipping \u201cis now diverting around southern Africa, adding to the cost of goods, disrupting global economies, adding to \u2013 or shutting off supplies to the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPresident Trump\u2002<\/u><\/a>has found it unacceptable. What we inherited was \u2013 was a terrible situation. And this is one of what will be a sustained effort to right that wrong and to reopen global commerce,\u201d Waltz added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump on Saturday ordered a series of airstrikes against the Houthis, a militant group backed by Iran, saying the U.S. would use an \u201coverwhelming lethal force\u201d to take out the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump also warned Iran to stop supporting the rebel group and said he would hold the country \u201cfully accountable\u201d for the proxy group\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The attacks were carried out by Air Force jets and armed drones that took off from the region. A source told The Hill that it\u2019s the first of a \u201cmany days if not weeks\u201d attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The attacks come as the Houthis vow to continue attacking shipping vessels in the Red Sea. The group has targeted the ships since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, increasing tensions in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nasr el-Din Amer, a spokesperson for the Houthis, told NBC News that the group plans to retaliate<\/u><\/a> and said they would not stop until the \u201cblockade on Gaza\u201d is lifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe will respond to the recent escalation with further escalation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
