The night four college students were fatally stabbed<\/a>, their surviving roommates at the Idaho home expressed worry about not being able to reach their friends and referred to someone in a \u201cski mask,\u201d court documents show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo one is answering,\u201d Dylan Mortensen texted to Bethany Funke at 4:22 a.m. the day the bodies were found. \u201cI\u2019m rlly confused rn.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The texts were included in a motion, which identifies them only by their initials, from prosecutors who argue that the messages are not hearsay and that they should be included as evidence in the trial of Bryan Kohberger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kohberger is accused of fatally stabbing four University of Idaho students\u2002<\/a>\u2014 Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin \u2014 in an off-campus home in the town of Moscow in November 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u2002<\/a>students’\u2002<\/a>bodies were found<\/a> Nov. 13, 2022. A person not identified in court documents told Funke and Mortensen to call 911 after discovering Goncalves\u2019 body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSomething happened in our house. We don\u2019t know what,\u201d the 911 caller says, according to a transcript of the call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne of the roommates who\u2019s passed out and she was drunk last night and she\u2019s not waking up,\u201d the caller said. \u201cOh, and they saw some man in their house last night.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the texts in the prosecutors\u2019 motion, from Mortensen, refers to something \u201clike a ski mask\u201d and says a \u201che\u201d had something on his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The motion says Mortensen gave grand jury testimony \u201cwhere she indicates she just witnessed a startling event (i.e. heard noises in residence and saw an unknown male<\/a> in the residence).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 911 call was made at 11:58 a.m. on Nov. 13, 2022, authorities have said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before that, texts show, the surviving roommates worried that their messages went unanswered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPls answer,\u201d Mortensen texted Goncalves twice, at 4:32 a.m. and again at 10:23 a.m. \u201cR u up??\u201d she then asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mogen, Kernodle, Goncalves and two other women who survived lived at the off-campus home on Kings Road. Goncalves had recently moved out<\/a> but returned to attend a nearby party, her family has said. Chapin was Kernodle\u2019s boyfriend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kohberger, who was a doctoral student of criminal justice at nearby Washington State University, is charged with four counts of first-degree murder<\/a> and one count of burglary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A judge has entered a plea of not guilty on Kohberger’s behalf. A trial has been set for Aug. 11<\/a>. Prosecutors have said they will seek the death penalty<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kohberger was arrested in Pennsylvania<\/a> on Dec. 30, 2022, more than six weeks after the killings, on a fugitive from justice warrant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is being held without bond in jail in Ada County, Idaho.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The killings happened in Latah County, but the Idaho Supreme Court granted the requests of Kohberger’s defense to move the trial to Ada County<\/a> over fears that he would not be able to get a fair trial where the slayings occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
